Thats why I am so harsh with my comments. For me, this isn't the 1st time he has been bad in Spring. In the intersquad game he hit the backstop once, Eldred ripped a double off him, MIGUEL NEGRON had a real solid basehit off him, and Cole Armstrong took him to the warning track. He was incredibly wild, and behind in almost every count.

He looks EXACTLY like he did in 2007, which isn't going to work for this club. The bullpen has been upgraded this winter(on paper at least). He no longer is needed to be a set up man. Unless an injury happens, you already pretty much have locks for the pen in Jenks-Dotel-Linebrink-Thornton-Logan. IMO Wass should be a total lock, but the Sox don't seem to feel that way, so you probably have the last two spots coming down to Wasserman/Masset/Macdougal/Broadway. I'll take Wasserman for the short work in the 6th and 7th, and Broadway for long work.

I agree completely. If MacD makes this team over Wassermann, I will not be happy. I just fear that, because he's experienced and expensive, they'll keep MacD around.

How in the world did Thome get a SB? I would have thought that the day I saw Thome get a SB, he would have been traded and running against the battery of Contreras and Pierzynski.

These 2 years I've thought Thome was surprisingly fast for his size and age. He seems clearly faster than Konerko, Crede, and A.J. to me.

I think he can go 30-30 this year (written in green).

What manager hits & runs with an 0-2 count and a windmill at the plate?

Dude.

ITS SPRING TRAINING!

This is where players try all kinds of stuff to get ready for the season. Its why it has "training" in the title.

im not gonna make any excuses for macdougal, but i guarantee you his problem is not a STRAGHT fastball....its his inability to locate his fastball that still has nice tail (in fact ill bet that his fastball has more movement than just about everyone in our pen except wasserman), and his inability to throw a breaking ball....i remember when this guy first came up with KC and his slider was just absolutely filthy...just one of those breaking balls that opposing hitters just had no shot on when he located it...of course that was always his problem with it, location...he got in trouble cuz he could never get it over

Exactly. MacDougal has filthy, filthy stuff. He used to throw close to 100 with his straight fastball, IIRC, but he apparently was told to rely more on his 2-seamer, which is a fantastic pitch (94+ with movement) -- WHEN he gets it over. He still has a good slider, but again, WHEN he gets it over. If he's not throwing strikes often, he gets hit hard.

I've often wondered why these guys have such problems throwing strikes consistently, when they know (at least, I hope so) it's the key to success. Is it a mental block, or is it mechanics?

You're fine with inane decisions by the manager of our team? I'm not.

Would you "be fine" if he decided to play Thome at 1B to get some work in for him on fielding grounders? Or how about putting our backup catcher at 1B...oh wait, that already happened last season.

Spring training is the time you play with lineups, showcase some trade bait (sadly, like Joe Crede), get a look at some of our youngsters, etc. It is NOT the time you practice things that will not be taking place during the regular season. AJ should NEVER be trying to steal a base. A hit and run with a guy like Cabrera hitting would be fine, but with an 0-2 count and Josh Fields at the plate, the only guy we have that I would be OK trying to steal a base would be Owens. At least that makes some kind of sense.

So just exactly when would you try and teach a promising young ballplayer the nuances of the hit and run?

With MacDoug his delivery is so violent and all over the place that he's unable to repeat it consistently.

When he's got a count that's conducive to it being successful maybe? Setting him up for failure isn't the best way to encourage him to do it again.

LOL, another one who doesn't get it. Oz should go to manager training if he's the one who told AJ to try and steal a base on an 0-2 count with the strikeout king at the plate.

Then again, maybe he's trying to teach him to cut down on his swing with two strikes and used the hit and run as a mechanism for doing so. You have no idea what was on his mind or what he was trying to accomplish. To criticize a manager in the first week of ST for an in game move is bordering on asisinine.

I really doubt it was a hit and run with an 0-2 count, but if it was, it doesn't matter if it was little league, pony league the WS or spring training, it is asasnine. Committting Josh Fields to swing at a pitch almost certainly not to be a strike isn't going to teach him anything. I wasn't watching or listening to the game, but if there were 2 out, they might have sent the runner to either get in scoring position or if he was thrown out, give Fields a new slate.

I think this entire f***ing discussion is asinine and I'm out of it.

Probably a good idea to bow out since you don't have a leg to stand on in this instance. It was a ridiculous managerial decision, and the date on the calendar doesn't make it any less stupid. To argue otherwise is a waste of time.
