I'll reserve my snarky remarks for now... just read. (you can find the actual footage on break.com)

HONOLULU — The United States Marines Corps condemned a YouTube video purportedly showing a Marine viciously mistreating a puppy as "deplorable" on Tuesday and promised that a full investigation is under way.

In the clip, an as-yet unidentified Marine apparently throws the young dog off a rocky cliff as he's joking with another Marine.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," Major Chris Perrine, the public affairs director at the Marine Corps base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, said in a statement.

"This video came to our attention this morning, and we have initiated an investigation," said Perrine. "We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action."

Soon after the uproar started Tuesday, YouTube removed the video from its site on the grounds that it violated content rules -- though it was still accessible and available via other links online.

Perrine said it appears that the man in the video is a lance corporal based with a unit in the Hawaiian islands. But his actions weren't characteristic of those of most men and women who serve, Perrine added.

"The vast majority of Marines conduct their duties in an honorable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States," he said. "There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

The low-quality clip shows two Marines joking as one holds up what appears to be a motionless black and white puppy, which he then hurls into a rocky gully.

“Oh, I tripped,” the Marine says as he throws the dog.

A yelping sound is heard as the animal flies through the air.

“That’s mean. That was mean, Motari," an unseen second man can be heard saying.

The authenticity of the clip, which has been viewed more than 145,000 times since it was uploaded onto file-sharing Web site YouTube in the last two days, has not been verified — although forum members and bloggers have been frantically trying to track down details of the soldier.

"Certainly there's a lot of outrage and a lot of people are upset about it. I think every Marine is upset about this video," Perrine said. “We will investigate and take appropriate action and make sure our Marine is safe as well.

"That is mistreatment of a puppy. That is a violation of anybody's standards, and the Marine Corps sets extremely high standards."

It looked fake, which is one of the reasons I think they're looking into it...

either way it's not funny and sick.

What's worse is it's only one of at least a half dozen vids (not fake) on the net of US soldiers toying with the lives of dogs/cats in Iraq. (I've seen one shot with some type of flare or gas canister, Multiple dogs and cats blown up for sport with IEDs or mines of some kind, and it's always followed by laughing in what one can only hope is a PTSD-induced disregard for life) And those are only from the soldiers demented and stupid enough to upload such s*** to the internet.

Are there tales from WW II about stuff like this? (obviously not youtube videos, but stories or the sort?)

I'm trying to build a mental thesis about war.

Vietnam/Iraq vs. WW II.

A perception of evil/ideological evil vs. a present and real evil (please don't give me the 9/11 terrorism is real argument)

how does this affect the mental state of a human being. defending vs. occupying. I would guess that having to be in a constant state of prepardness for death messes with you.

How about them paying Iraqi kids to fight each other?

There are stories from pretty much every war about the atrocities committed. In the instant multimedia era, we just hear about it quicker.

yeah, I guess there were dead cows in Saving Private Ryan...they just didn't tell you how they died.

Well, War brings out the best and worst in people, I suppose.

If it's true, then this guy deserves to have his nuts chopped off. I'd much rather watch this dude get tortured to death as opposed to seeing a helpless animal getting thrown off of a cliff. If I was in combat with this lowlife, he might get hit with some friendly fire.
