Idea

Well, I was driving home from Easter dinner and I thought of an idea that might catch on, on here, to promote this very website, www.soxtalk.com. I thought of getting higher ranking/founding members of Soxtalk, to see if they could make Soxtalk bumper stickers and/or car magnets. Then we all pay for them ourselves (sending money to the admins and mods), and putting them on our cars. Thoughts on this?

I could see WSI members letting the air out of tire of cars with Soxtalk bumperstickers.

Only one way to settle the war. Dance fight. West Side Story style. Let's start nominating our team now.

We already had softball.
When I was a kid we had little styrofoam wls sunballs. Not every car has an antennae. Mine does I would have a sox talk sun ball proudly diplayed.. I would even wear a "sox talk" t-shirt if one were available. How about giving the t- shirt a slogan like soxtalk. "A history of winning ugly not a history of losing cute"

I like the idea or t-shirts, wristbands, bumper stickers/car magnets, and even hats. I think advertising would be good because even if we have "1.5 million posts", we have many, many guys that have 25,000+ posts and that accounts for a lot of posting. Advertising would be good to get many more than the 6,000+ members we have. I also like the idea of being able to meet each other at games.

We've had Cafe Press stuff before (wanna buy a g-string?), but no one ever bought it.

All we'd need to do is ask people on if they would buy Soxtalk stuff, and ask what they would buy. Bam, make enough stuff for those already willing to buy it.

except that 6000+ members would also increase the bandwidth total, and anytime something big happened the site would explode

There's a good contingency and more and more people are discovering the site every day. Advertising really isn't necessary. Let the site advertise itself, and if you strike up a conversation with a particularly informed Sox fan, refer them to the site. I've done it on a couple occasions, and even if they didn't join, I really don't care. Anything else costs money that the site likely won't see back in profit, and it's just more of a strain on others to maintain that kind of stuff. I imagine if someone really wanted to put "soxtalk.com" on a shirt, either Jason would say can I have $5 just cuz, or he wouldn't care because it is in fact free advertising and it makes whoever puts the logo on their shirt happy because they have a shirt with "soxtalk.com" on the front.

One of the great things about this site is that it's a bit of a neighborhood; we like some neighbors, we don't like others, and there's not much we can do about it (unless they say, in this hypothetical neighborhood, happen to like beat the s*** out of you or break into your house or whatever other parallels you can think of between an online neighborhood and a real neighborhood). The other great thing is that houses are going up, and people are moving in all the time. It's a pretty damn good sized neighborhood, it's growing, and it's great right now.

I really don't think advertising is necessary.

Type in "White Sox message boards" on google. Watch the first website that pops up.

/thread.

"white sox message board is better and so is "white sox forum"

Guess who ranks # 1?

To fix that soxtalk needs a higher page rank.

Page rank Comparison

wsi 5

soxtalk 3

thats what needs to be worked on.

Re-create the front page. Put articles up and submit every article to digg and reddit. If soxtalk receives 20 digs a day, that would double membership in the course of a year. Do you have a website with pagerank? Link Soxtalk to it. Online advertising will be more effective than offline.

Lack of writers with time to write is the big reason the front page has not been maintained. Most of the people who used to write have gone onto work, families, college etc, and just can't commit to doing it anymore. I am sure if we found enough people, we could re-create the front page again.
