Injury could land Owens on DL

Home opener on April 7 would likely be targeted as return date

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The right groin problem that has bothered Jerry Owens for much of Spring Training once again has acted up on the fleet-footed leadoff man and center fielder, meaning he could start the 2008 season on the disabled list.

Owens went for an MRI on Tuesday afternoon to get another look at the groin, and if he is placed on the DL this week, Owens would be eligible to return around the home opener on April 7.

"I'm going today to get a MRI to make sure we are treating it the right way," Owens told MLB.com Tuesday afternoon. "The MRI could show nothing and we would go from there, or it could show something and we would go from there."

"It's suspected to just be scar tissue breaking up," White Sox general manager Ken Williams added. "If it shows anything more than just scar tissue, I'm going to be as cautious as I can possibly be with this guy. His legs are his game. I would rather have him miss the first week than have this problem bothering him throughout the whole darn season."

A pattern has followed Owens since he tweaked the groin back in the first intrasquad game at the end of February. He plays well after taking a few days rest, hitting .361 this spring, but then the problem seems to creep up again.

For Owens, the pain began on Sunday against the Royals as he was legging out a triple. While Owens wants to be part of the Opening Day lineup against the Indians and C.C. Sabathia, he understands a trip to the DL to start the year might help him get healthy for the bulk of the games.

"I want to be able to play a healthy, full season," said Owens. "But my legs are the most important part of my game, and I want to make sure I'm ready to go at 100 percent

Just watch. Alexei will be in CF on opening day if Owens is on the DL.

You are right. Alexei is fast, and that fits the Ozzie leadoff model.

Here is the best indicator. How much CF is Brian playing versus how much is Alexei playing.

I think the organization knows what they have in Brian Anderson the CFer. Its beneficial for them to have Brian try all the other OF positions (considering they were probably slating him to take the 4th OF position if he made the team...knowing they wanted Owens' legs in the line-up most of the time).

I agree with the first sentence. They know they have one of the better CFs in baseball in Anderson, he doesn't need to prove anything. They want to get a look at how the other guys do/improve. If Anderson is in a regular season game, there is absolutely no reason for him not to be playing CF.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- White Sox center fielder Jerry Owens will start the regular season on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, after an MRI Tuesday revealed a slight tear in his right adductor muscle.

The rest of the blog said he aggravated it running out the triple on Sunday. He did seem gimpy after that. One less toy for Ozzie.

I hope to God that Brian Anderson does not get the oppurtunity to corrupt this team with his outstanding ability to be a panzee and a punchin judy hitter, If you are out there reading this brian anderson it is too late and you already know. You are a terrible baseball player and i hope that you can play the bench for the World Series champions Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2010.

NOT only is this good news in that it gets either Anderson or Quentin (I really liked what i saw out of both by the end of ST) into the lineup, but maybe more importantly...ozzies obsession for a fast leadoff hitter (having cabrera batting 2) could force alexei into the linup at 2nd over Uribe....both of those would be good consequences of owens being hurt...

Does that sound like something he might need surgery to correct or is that re-hab-able?

Its really too bad the Sox don't have the prospects to get McFail to bite on a Brian Roberts deal. He would be a perfect fit for this team.

According to Farmio, KW tried to get Roberts within the last month, but didn't have the prospects needed.

If Brian pissed in your cereal in 2006, you should try it again today and see if it still tastes like piss, because I don't think that flavor is there anymore.

And the Devil Rays ceased to exist in 2007. They are just the Rays now.

100% Fills two holes, and makes Owens lead off "abilities" moot while opening the roster for BA since he doesnt have to lead off or be "speedy".

1.Roberts 2B

2. Ocab SS

3. Thome DH

4. Kong 1B

5. Dye RF

6. Swish LF

7. AJP C

8. Crede 3B

9. BA CF
