Hafner isn't going to catch fire, he's just not the same without his performance enhancing drugs, as his falloff last year was huge and this year is even bigger without them. However, I think Cleveland is the biggest threat to get back in it obviously. To me, Minnesota is what they are right now (a .500 team), Detroit just seems like they might be having "one of those years" like we had last year, and Kansas City sucks. The key point is your first sentence though, and it's true. I think if we eventually start playing .500 ball and only end up winning like 88 games, that might be good enough. That is why the next 9 games against teams we are better then are HUGE, we need to keep gaining ground on .500 to improve our margain of error.

Reading this more rational thought of mine is a good idea after a series like that. We're clearly going to make things a lot more difficult than they should be though, then again that is the route we took in 2005 too.

The Sox are in first place, which is good.

Many of us long time Sox fans, however, are not excited at all.

My question is ... are we too demanding on this team? Should we be elated at what's going on and our postseason chances?

Or are we long-time, loyal Sox fans aware when we have a special team and when we do not, and we are correct in thinking this team is the worst first-place team imaginable?

This team has had some really big flops in certain series.

What is the verdict??

Should we be elated with our first-place White Sox and should we shut up about our horrid offense and streakiness??

How about somewhere in the middle? Oh, that's right, that would be too much to ask.

Enjoy the good times, don't worry about the bad ones.

Worringly, the Tigers are starting to get their act together a bit.

That's the team I'm still most worried about.

The Indians will most likely trade Sabathia to the Yanks, while I only see the Twinkies being a .500 team.

We've just gotta keep doing what we've been doing.

It's Tigers or bust IMO for the division. A couple more mediocre weeks for the Tribe, and they are going to start selling. With Hafner basically dead, Vmart out for 6-8, and Westbrook done for the year, they just don't have the bullets. With the Twins, I just don't see them having the rotation to go on any sort of long winning streak.

Sox really gave the Tigers some second life, but as you say, the Sox just have to keep doing what they are doing.

As long as the Sox keep pitching, I don't think the Tigers have the arms to get back into this. How much are the Reteria and Cabrera trades hurting them right now? All of that great pitching depth they had is gone, and it could have been helping them right now.

They really miss Jurrjens, who's pitching great for the Braves, but Gallarega has stepped up and won 6-7 games for them also.

If Verlander gets his act together, this team is going to be competing with us in September IMHO.

Just a quick calculation and thought...

If the Sox continue to win at their current rate (.563), they will finish the season with 91 wins.

For the Tribe to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 58 out of their remaining 90 games (.644 winning percentage).

For the Tigers to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 57 out of their remaining 90 games (.633 winning percentage).

And for the Twins to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 55 out of their remaining 90 games (.611 winning percentage).

Their winning percentages over their first 72 games:

Tribe - .458

Tigers - .472

Twins - .500

(I didn't include the Royals above for a fairly obvious reason. They suck. They would have to win 61 out of their remaining 90 games... a .677 winning percentage. They had a .417 winning percentage in their first 72 games.)
