Yeah can't say I really envy you all over there.

Just don't screw up like Homer Simpson did. Do what Ned Flanders did;

NEW YEARS EVE

Except Flanders, who lies in bed with Maude, and is woken up by the fireworks, music, and singing.

Oh, January 1st! Better get going on those taxes, Neddy!

-- Ned Flanders wakes up at midnight, "The Trouble With Trillions"

The hours are getting on now, and Ned is finishing up his taxes. Todd enters.

Todd: Daddy, what do taxes pay for?

Ned: Oh, why, everything! Policemen, trees, sunshine! And lets not forget the

folks who just don't feel like working, God bless 'em!

And many times more countries that wouldn't spend 60% of my tax money funding an endless war that doesn't make us safer.

Iraq is a big money pit. But it's no where near 60% the federal budget.

o $324 billion (+1.8%) - Unemployment/Welfare/Other mandatory spending

o $261 billion (+9.2%) - Interest on National Debt

* Discretionary spending: $1.114 trillion (+3.1%)

o $481.4 billion (+12.1%) - United States Department of Defense

o $145.2 billion (+45.8%) - Global War on Terror

o $69.3 billion (+0.3%) - Health and Human Services

o $56.0 billion (+0.0%) - United States Department of Education

o $39.4 billion (+18.7%) - United States Department of Veterans Affairs

o $35.2 billion (+1.4%) - US Department of Housing and Urban Development

o $35.0 billion (+22.0%) - State and Other International Programs

o $34.3 billion (+7.2%) - Department of Homeland Security

o $24.3 billion (+6.6%) - Energy

o $20.2 billion (+4.1%) - Administration of justice

o $20.2 billion (+3.1%) - Department of Agriculture

o $17.3 billion (+6.8%) - National Aeronautics and Space Administration

o $12.1 billion (+13.1%) - Department of Transportation

o $12.1 billion (+6.1%) - Department of Treasury

o $10.6 billion (+2.9%) - United States Department of the Interior

o $10.6 billion (-9.4%) - United States Department of Labor

Oh come on, I am sure you could make a living studying some sort of rare creatures in Berserkerstan or somewhere like that.

:usa

I'd probably live in a place called Berzerkestan just because of the name. :headbang

You're right, realistically it is only around 40%. I'd rather see the military portion of my tax money go to health care and education. I keep looking for that check box on the 1040, but no dice.

40% is still too high, even if you are talking all defense spending. Probably more like 22%.

I think your check box would end up screwing you in the end. Think of all the things someone like me would be 'checking' out of. Especially if I filed my taxes after a few beers.

I'm sure all the post offices are open until midnight tonight, huh? Accomodate laziness and you'll continue to get laziness. Shut it down at 5:00pm like every other day!! Screw the procrastinators!

Well, I'm not suggesting you get a checkbox too. ;)

40% was the number from a study that was put out on the air this morning before Amy Goodman interviewed Rep. Jan Schakowsky before this morning's Tax Day press conference in DC. But she's a lefty no-goodnik so I'm sure her number is inflated.

Today is only the deadline if you owe a balance. Procrastinate all you like if you are getting a refund.

I used TurboTax, and I'm getting a refund. A week or so after sending in my 1040, I received a letter from the IRS saying that I miscalculated my taxes, and that they were going to send me refund that was about 12K more than I had figured. It's the first year I've used TurboTax (I've done them by hand in the past after having an accountant friend do them once). I was thoroughly confused. The extra 12K would be great, but that means I've been doing them wrong for years - and was probably due for a huge financial windfall. Aaah, another Brady "bonus baby."

A week later, I got a letter from the IRS saying I owed them the extra 12K that they deposited into my account. And they want the money right away. I guess the US has a deficit or something. I'm still getting my original refund, I just get to borrow 12K for a few weeks. The IRS always crushes the dreams of the little man.
