I want a good thinking outside the box topic.

i believe my roomate sr year of college wrote a huge paper on the pros and cons of having a tournament system for NCAA football, and did a comparison between tv ratings and a whole bunch of other analysis between it and the march madness tourney..

I am always partial to the "hot streak" debate, and whether there is such a thing as "getting hot" or whether its just statistical probability....i believe stephen jay gould, the famous scientists, has a good article arguing that dimaggios hit streak and players getting hot in a bball game is just a function of probability. basically he followed an entire team for an entire nba season and kept track of every shot taken and concluded that making the previous shot, or making some % of the previous handful of shots, had absolutely no bearing on whether you would make your next shot...thus debunking the "hot hand" theory.

ive always wanted to write a big thesis on a sports topic, so i have a bunch of ideas...ill post more as they come to my mind

Pros & cons of eliminating baseball's anti-trust exemption

Pros & cons of paying college athletes for participation in sports:

(colleges providing some small amounts of cash in addition to tuition to help avoid challenges created by financial hardship... to keep student/athletes in college... cut boosters and other forms of temptation out of the process... that sort of thing)

Im thinking about talking about how NBA Draft should be the same rules as NFL draft(3 years after graduation)

The pros and cons of athletes being role models for young kids/adolescents/young adults.

Attendance at sporting events v. world events (increase decrease etc.)

Sports as a classroom (mathematics and stats, history, science of a curveball, sports jounalism and literacy, economics, supply and demand, war strategy, social studies referencing Jackie Robinson and the latin explosion in baseball, architecture, )

Whether NFL Draft picks should be paid like NBA Draft picks to fixed 3-4 year deals.

Ethics in Sport.

Should Sport and Politics mix (e.g Olympics / Tibet).

Pro's and Con's of expansion teams over the past 10 years.

Pro's and Con's on TV revenue for certain sports and how it affects fans etc. e.g the Blackhawks are a perfext example.

How did that go for you? It's an interesting debate.

I went on the side that they shouldn't be role models, and even if they are athletes they're still everyday people. So it's perfectly fine if you want your kids to look up to an athlete, but make sure when their favorite athlete makes news on SportsCenter off the field you're there to explain to them that they too make mistakes.
