Considering the Cubs/Sox games have only actually been relevant for a decade or so and the Bears and Packers go way back, and they're an actual division rivalry, I'd say it isn't really even close and I'm kind of bewildered that there's an actual argument about it. Even in the same city, the Sox and Cubs playing each other is like any other MLB game in the standings and otherwise what they do doesn't affect the other team, and it's mostly just s***-talking, bragging rights and $$ ratings.

Worse? Seems like am awkward adjective to use, I would say it is stranger to root for both the Bears and Packers, you might as well toss in a couple other teams and root for the entire division.

Now when I was living in Chicago I did root for more than one football team, and now that I think about it, they were also in the division. I cheered for the Bears and whomever was playing the Packers.

I just don't get the logic as to how rooting for the Sox/Cubs is worse than rooting for the Bears/Packers. The Cubs hardly influence whether or not the Sox make the playoffs, while the Packers are in the same division as the Bears. If the Sox lose 6 to the Cubs, it has the same impact on the team's standings as losing 6 to any other non-AL Central opponent. If the Bears lose twice to the Packers, they're in a pretty bad position to make the playoffs if both teams are in contention.

Sure, there are social reasons why some people might hate the Cubs more than the Packers, but they don't actually influence the teams ability to advance (make the playoffs, etc.) on the field, which is ultimately the only thing that matters.

Neither is wrong.

It's just sports.

I like the Packers, because my wife is a Packers fan.

In fact, the Packers are the only NFL team I follow in the slightest.

I cheer for the Cubs when they don't play the Sox, because my wife and most of the best people in my life are Cubs fans.

I've always loved the Red Wings, too - now almost as much as (and until $Bill died, MORE THAN) the Blackhawks.

I don't feel bad about any of it.

You know why?

It's just sports.

Order of rooting:

Sox > NL Teams > Cubs > AL Teams > Yanks/Sawks > AL Central Teams > Indians

Bears > AFC Teams > Pats > NFC Teams > NFC North Teams > Packers

So I would rather have the Cubs win vs an AL team since it helps the Sox. I would rather have the Packers lose every game for the rest of their existence.

The only time this changes is the team we are playing becomes the most hated.

Bears/Packers...they're in the same division and are rivals, while the Sox and Cubs are rivals, but are in different leagues.

That's like being a Sox and Tigers fan or a Sox and Indians fan.

Funny how alot of the people saying Packers/Bears dont live in chicago. How many fights break out in Soldier field during the games? Cubs/Sox games are 200% more intense than Bears/Packers. Bars, taverns, households, and the stadium its much more intense of a rivalry.

Um, if you're talking about me, check your facts...I lived in Chicago my whole life and go to school in Florida.

How many Packers fans are at a Bears game? How many of them are insane enough to try to start s***?

Its not personal, just an observation.

Thats also a reason why the rivalry isnt as intense. Packers/Bears may have been crazy back in the day, but its not that way anymore. In fact at a Bears game, I think Detroit/Chicago is more intense.

If you go to a bar around chicago during one of these games, the stadium during the games, or even THIS messageboard during one of them, I guarantee that cubs/sox is most intense, theres no question.

Ok, then why is it all about intensity? Why isn't it bad to cheer for two teams in the same division? The question isn't which one is more intense (no doubt that's Sox/Cubs), but as a sports fan which combo is worse to cheer for.

Honestly, I love seeing the Cubs lose any time they can, but it rarely ever affects the Sox (unless they are playing an AL Central team or a really good AL team that can get the WC).

Because the hatred and disrespect between Cubs/Sox fans are higher than that of Bears/packers fans, which is why its worse to cheer for them both. There probably isnt a more sterotyped, social-economic, hatred driven, rivalry for chicago sports fans than Cubs/Sox, which is why is worse to cheer for them both.

I think a lot of it stems from just disliking the Cubs in general and being a Sox fan is just the kicker. I think the whole lovable loser thing is ridiculous and think the team exploits its "fans" more than most others in sports. The Packers on the other hand I actually respect as an organization. So in terms of on the field rivalry I would say I would rather see the Bears beat the Packers but in terms of just disliking an organization I would say the Cubs/Sox rivalry is more intense.

This is precisely the way that I feel. I grew up in the 1950's. The NFL at least to me as a little kid was not what it is today. Baseball was king back then. Every kid played baseball. Every kid collected baseball cards. I've hated the Cubs for as long as I can remember. There's no comparison. I admit that I'm somewhat of a fair weather football fan. That is to say I don't have the same passion for the Bears as I do for the White Sox. Admittedly, I live and breathe White Sox baseball. I don't have the same feeling about the Bears and I love the Bears. It just isn't the same.

I know I dont watch the Packers play very often and hope for a loss like I do many times during the summer when the cubs are on.

I think you need to get over the Cubs. Just ignore them; what they do has no effect on the White Sox aside from 6 games a year.

I am aware all of our friends and wonderful Sox fans around the country are going to vote Bears/Packers and that's fine. But anybody who has lived in/grew up in Chicago or the immediate suburbs such as myself knows the answer is Cubs/Sox and it's not even anywhere near resembling close. If you can grow up in Chicagoland and be able to root for both teams, you are as Virginia Tech basketball coach Seth Greenburg would put it, "certifiably insane".

They're not asking if you should cheer or not, they're asking which one honestly affects you the most as a fan.

It's stupid to think that the Cubs affect the Sox unless you include the 6 interleague games and your feelings at school.

The Packers directly affect whether or not the Bears make the playoffs.

"Anybody?" Just because I/we have a different state doesn't mean we aren't from Chicago. I live and breathe Chicago, I'm a Southsider to the bone. Nothing personal or against you in particular (just happens to be your post I'm responding to), but I find it really annoying that people (mostly on the internet) assume that because I live in Maryland, I don't or couldn't possibly know anything about the Cubs/Sox rivalry, that I've never been to a Cubs/Sox game, etc.

btw, if you live in Chicago and can root for both teams, you're probably what most people would call a casual baseball fan, and you just don't care.
