Has a 7 game hitting streak going raising his BA over .300 on the season. with the options we have at 2b i dont think he'll get a shot this year, but i wouldnt mind seeing him make a run at that 2b spot...he would fit into this team very well i think with his ability to command the strike zone
scenario
Michael Dubee came back from a bad 1st inning and put together a pretty nice outing for W-S. Went 7 innings for the win.

scenario
QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 09:10 PM) Shirek is dominating low-A ball like a major conference college pitcher should. Dominating A-ball just the way a pitcher selected in the 23rd round should, eh? He's right at the average age for pitchers in the league. Where he's been shouldn't make a difference at this point. Gene Honda Civic
QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) Dominating A-ball just the way a pitcher selected in the 23rd round should, eh? He's right at the average age for pitchers in the league. Where he's been shouldn't make a difference at this point. What if some of his time was spent in the California Penal League Righthander Charlie Shirek is an even bigger enigma at Nebraska. He has the best pure stuff on the staff, with a fastball that has reached 96 mph and features good sink and run, as well as a solid slider and changeup at times. But his delivery is shaky and he hasn't fooled hitters, getting touched for a 6.39 ERA entering the NCAA regionals. After losing his spot in the Cornhuskers' weekend rotation in mid-April, Shirek was arrested. Police charged him with vandalizing a bike and a car and said his blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest was .158. He was briefly suspended and has pitched just three times since rejoining the team. He strained his oblique muscle in the Big 12 Conference tournament. I'm pretty sure Shirek was a draft eligible sophomore, even though he's now 22. He wasn't a 23rd round talent, much like Kevin Patterson wasn't a 24th round talent, or Jordan Danks a 19th(?). The Sox, as they (along with every other team in baseball) are known to do, used a number of their second day pick on guys who were first-day talents in an effort to entice a few of them to sign for far above slot. Shirek was the only one who signed (for 5th round money, 6 figure signing bonus).

Vandalizing a bike? That made me LOL, as I'm trying to picture exactly how you vandalize a bike (or why you'd want to, for that matter). scenario
My point was that there is alot of talent all about the same age as Shirek in the Carolina League. I don't think his experience at Nebraska explains why he's dominating this year. The reason he's dominating is because he's throwing an incredible number of strikes (22K's/3BB's) and not walking people. Nothing in his backround suggested that would happen. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/S/C...ie-Shirek.shtml Hopefully it's the result of development that will allow him to continue to harness the powerful arm he has. DBAHO
Either way, it's pleasing to see Shriek have the start that he has had. He keeps this up, he should be in W-S pretty soon. And he fits the mould of pitching prospects the Sox brass have tried to draft over the past season or 2. Guys with good fastballs (with a good sink on them) and average other stuff that they hold they can develop over time.

3E8
The bike stuff was not uncommon at my school, it's not vandalizing in the sense of defacing the bike it's vandalizing in the sense of rendering the bike useless by bending the wheels. He's not in the Carolina League. He's in the South Atlantic League. I would argue that major conference college baseball is on par with Low-A ball in a lot of ways. There isn't the same depth in college, but the best of the best dominate A ball right out of school. In his 2nd season he should be doing well in Low A or he truly is a non-prospect. And no doubt, a talented player should perform well in low-A ball if he's really a prospect. But to dominate the way he has... come on. Plus, this really is his first season. He was a late signee and only pitched 6 innings in 2007. And if turns out he is a 'best of the best' type player... and we got him in the 23rd round... even if he was paid over slot... Kudos to the Sox for a coup. Edited April 19, 2008 by scenario

But unless you play in a baseball powerhouse and play against pretty good competition I tend to believe college ball is a bit worse than Low A.
