An ACE can get you out

Yep, he sure can. I do not think they give style points. It's get them out, who really cares how?

And what we always debate, isn't Mark's talents, but the definition of ace. Some people define it to the point where every #1 in the rotation and half of the #2s would qualify, and some define it to the point where one or two guys in the league *may* qualify in most years.

Mark has been the man for the Sox for most of this century. He is a winner, a classy player, plays to the crowd when he can, always a fan favorite, someone Sox fans can be poud of, and a credit to the franchise. If that's an ace in your book, you are welcome to that definition, if it makes you feel better to only call two guys aces, then you are welcome to that.

I find the people who are the most restrictive are the ones that try and impress people with their knowledge.

Here's a list of all pitchers since 1998 with:

- A minimum of 1000 innings pitched

- An ERA less than 4.00 since 4/1/98

They are ranked by ERA.

It's a pretty select list. Most qualified as aces at some point of their careers.

Bottom Line: It's tough to say that someone with 1000+ innings and a career ERA under 4.00 is not an ace.

# Player ERA

1 Pedro Martinez 2.72

2 John Smoltz 3.02

3 Kevin Brown 3.08

4 Randy Johnson 3.08

5 Roy Oswalt 3.13

6 Brandon Webb 3.19

7 Johan Santana 3.22

8 Jake Peavy 3.25

9 Roger Clemens 3.38

10 Carlos Zambrano 3.40

11 Greg Maddux 3.49

12 Tim Hudson 3.51

13 Curt Schilling 3.51

14 Tom Glavine 3.61

15 Roy Halladay 3.62

16 Kerry Wood 3.67

17 Al Leiter 3.68

18 Barry Zito 3.68

19 Derek Lowe 3.70

20 Jason Schmidt 3.74

21 Josh Beckett 3.76

22 Ben Sheets 3.76

23 Dontrelle Willis 3.80

24 A.J. Burnett 3.82

25 John Lackey 3.82

26 Mark Buehrle 3.83

27 Mike Mussina 3.86

28 Brad Penny 3.88

29 Andy Pettitte 3.92

MB's had stretches where he's had periods like this before, so I'm not majorly concerned. It's a good thing, he's the one we're worrying about right now, instead of Danks, Floyd or Jose.

Right now, Cabrera's RZR is .756, down from .807 last season, so he certainly needs to pick it up there.

Uribe has gone from .796 in 2007 to .806 currently.
