scenario
Somebody PLEASE explain to me how the Indians moved up from #4 to #3 on that same list in the last week... while the Sox are ranked 7th. The Tribe is 7-12. They have lost 7 of their last 10 games They have the lowest batting average of any team in the AL. They are last in slugging in the AL. Their team ERA is 11th out of 14. But... they are 3rd in the Power Rankings this week. LOL. The author must be from Cleveland.

The Ginger Kid
probably because of the strong starts they're getting from Lee, Westbrook and Carmona. They must figure that the hitting will have to click at some point, and when it does...
CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) probably because of the strong starts they're getting from Lee, Westbrook and Carmona. They must figure that the hitting will have to click at some point, and when it does... ...and when it does then they can rank them higher but until then they suck. Swingandalongonetoleft
Giants found themselves ahead of the Dodgers in the standings but everyone knows that won't be the case in a matter of days, do LAD are ranked above them. When it's this early in the season a teams potential plays a role in where they get ranked. If you want to base it on record then mlb.com has the standings. heirdog
Kansas City in the bottom of the rankings? Hah, that team is for real. Ok. Just kidding.
max power
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) They use a weighted scale that gives more credit for wins last year than this year? That still wouldn't explain them moving up. Its probably that whoever was ahead of them in the prior week did even worse than they did last week. If that's not it, then its just pure bias. SoxFan562004
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Somebody PLEASE explain to me how it matters? Exactly. Often times the major media outlets make their preseason picks and then they stand behind them no matter what, ie this sereis with the Yankees and the White Sox. Yankees lose 2 of 3 = A-Rod was hurt, can't tell much, Yankees win 2 out of 3 = Yankees young pitching is propelling them and Sox weren't as good as they were playing

From what I can tell, Dayn Perry and Rob Neyer are the two print journalists who routinely tell us the Indians are the best team ever, so that's why. scenario
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Somebody PLEASE explain to me how it matters? If a large national sports publication puts out a power ranking, it seems reasonable to assume that the thinking behind it should have some semblance of logic. And if it doesn't, it seems reasonable to question it. That's all I was doing. Trying to find the logic behind a team losing 7 of its last 10 games and going UP in a power ranking. Compounded by the fact that they are 4.5 games behind us in the standings, but 4 slots above us in the power ranking. Seems pretty ridiculous. Doesn't it?
