Soxpranos
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 05:42 PM) Brian looks like a different player to me. More patient, better eye, and shorter swing. And still cant bunt, he cost us that Saturday game at Wrigley last year as well when he couldn't get a bunt down with 2 on and nobody out. witesoxfan
QUOTE (Soxpranos @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 06:18 PM) And still cant bunt, he cost us that Saturday game at Wrigley last year as well when he couldn't get a bunt down with 2 on and nobody out. He's in the AL, so he shouldn't know how to bunt (and before anyone eats my face, that's meant facetiously...he should know how to bunt, but it shouldn't by any stretch of the imagination be a priority. I'd rather have him have the ability to hit a flyball to deep left field rather than bunt with 1 out in the inning and a man on 3rd)

Really? You are judging his ability to do something on a squeeze play with a fastball that handcuffed him. The best he could of done there was foul it off. KipWellsFan
I've never understood why Owens doesn't get a little more credit around here. Hitting 270 with 32 stolen bases in limited appearance in the American league last year isn't bad, and he's doing well at Triple A so far this year. lostfan
QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 07:16 PM) Given that Anderson's career (and current) OBP is still well below .300, he has absolutely not shown more than Owens offensively. While he has more upside than Owens, he has yet to tap that potential and is in the neighborhood of a Uribe-like automatic out. I don't know why people keep bringing up Anderson's career numbers as an argument why he'll never amount to anything. If it was really that simple and they still thought he'd never be anything more than a .600 OPS player, they'd have just DFA'd him this past offseason and there would be no argument. Kalapse
From Cowley concerning Richar: Richar update Trainer Herm Schneider said second baseman Danny Richar is progressing well with the fractured first left rib that sidelined him most of spring training, and the Sox hope he will start a rehab assignment with Class AAA Charlotte by the end of the month And as for Owens; he's fighting to keep his OPS north of .600 right now. .230/.307/.294/.601, 124 AB, 5 2B, 1 HR, 10/14 SB, 14:25 BB:K
scenario
Owens or Richar? Anybody notice that Chris Getz was 4-4 two nights ago and 2-4 last night? So, we've got a 2nd base prospect who can lead off hitting .302 with a .362 OBP at Charlotte... with 5 homeruns and an .842 OPS. Meanwhile, as of this morning, Jerry Owens is batting .234 with a .312 OBP... with 1 homerun and a .610 OPS Edited May 17, 2008 by scenario

Sample size... get too excited and jump to the conclusion that Getz is better than Richar and is going to jump into MLB and lead off. I mean when Richar went to Charlotte last year, in about the same number of games he hit .346 with a .956 OPS. Then he had 200 PA's in the majors and did just about the same thing that mostly everyone who has ever been called up to MLB did except a few, and a bunch of people were ready to declare he sucked, but that's another story. I'm also going to add that Luis Terrero is hitting .344 with a .962 OPS right now. Edited May 17, 2008 by lostfan

You're jumping to conclusions about what I meant. I wasn't taking a shot at Richar. The fact is he can't help us until he is healthy and he's not going to see game action until almost June 1st. All I meant to do was point out that Owens, after 124 at-bats is hitting squat and probably not going to be the boost to our offense that some people hope he would be. Meanwhile, we have a 2B with a career minor league average of .300 (Getz) and just happens to be hitting .300 again this year in AAA. So... who helps us more right now? Another outfielder who can't hit or a 2B who looks like he can. Edited May 17, 2008 by scenario

I looked deeper and he's never sustained anything like this for that long at the lower levels. He's about an average prospect.
scenario
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 16, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) I was just saying don't get too excited about Getz's stats after a month of AAA ball. I looked deeper and he's never sustained anything like this for that long at the lower levels. He's about an average prospect. Dig deeper. The scouting report on him is better than that. When he was drafted, he was considered one of the best hitting infielders in the draft. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Chris-Getz.shtml That year he moved from college ball to rookie ball to A-ball. In his first full minor league season he was in AA. That is the only year he has 'struggled', which is not a surprise for a player promoted that quickly. In his minor league career, he's averaged a .299 BA, and now he's batting .300. So, the small sample size of this year is irrelevant. He can hit. lostfan
Meh I can't help but to think that if we called him up right now he would fall flat just like everybody else who gets a quick promotion to MLB, if only for a few months.
Kalapse
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=415307 CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox placed second baseman Juan Uribe on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and purchased outfielder DeWayne Wise's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Chicago also sent infielder Danny Richar, who fractured a rib in spring training, to Charlotte on a rehabilitation assignment. Uribe, batting .198 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 38 games, was injured in the sixth inning of a game against the Angels in Los Angeles on May 15. The move to the DL is retroactive to May 16. Wise spent parts of five seasons in the majors with Toronto, Atlanta and Cincinnati before signing with Chicago on March 5. He was batting .338 with eight homers, 18 RBIs, 31 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in 43 games with Charlotte.
