I would love to see Fields on this team on the bench if he could play LF, RF, and 1B too...you could get him 4-5 games a week if that were the case. You envision him playing against every lefty at DH, so that's about 1-2 games a week and then you have him play a game or two a week at 3B. If he knew LF, RF, and 1B, you could substitute him variably throughout the course of the season and he'd be getting pretty solid playing time

The problem, of course, is that he can't play LF, RF, and 1B, so this post is pretty much pointless.

It's not completely pointless. Rest Joe when it's artificial turf and Thome against lefties. And I think any 3rd baseman can play 1st. It's not a huge adjustment. Remember Ozzie put Dye at 1st was it last year ?

On a side note I see Owens hit a double and a HR and upped his BA to .306 and OBP to .403 while Wes Whisler is now 5-0 with a miniscule 1.26 ERA.

It is silly to replace a guy who can't hit major league pitching very well with a guy who showed he can?

Fields plays 3B so where is he going to play with Joe Crede in the lineup. He would be a PH at best.

He cant play outfield, That experiment is over.

That's a pretty bold statement, given that he never played there in the minors and his only meaningful experience in LF was in 21 games last season. Let him get some experience there in the minors and/or in winter ball before throwing the possibility out the window.

Right now we have 5 OF's under contract that people are writing articles (wise or not) asking them for playing time. 3 of them are hitting .300 in the big leagues, 1 has an OBP over .400 but has struggled a bit (but is also under contract), the last is hitting something like .300 down at Charlotte.

Josh Fields is not going to break in to this OF unless a lot of people start getting hurt.

It's not all that bold considering that's what has been said by the Sox powers that be.
