Pitcher possibly being called up

So... let's say Buehrle gets hit around tomorrow night. Not a scenario that's completely unbelievable.

Let's say he get's bounced in the third inning, or even the second... who comes in? Masset on one day of rest after a start... and expected to cover multiple innings? Probably not. It's easy to imagine, if this situation were to occur, that the Sox could use 4 relievers to cover the remainder of the game.

So... how much risk are you willing to take that they potentially burn the entire bullpen in the first game of a series? Because they can't cover a failed start?

IMO, it makes perfect sense to bring up a pitcher (one capable of going multiple innings) for 4 days to prevent that type of situation from happening.

It's a short-term insurance policy - plain and simple.

If Buehrle gets hit around, you leave him in there until he throws 110-120 pitches. And then you tell him to start throwing with his right hand. If the Sox are down by 9, they odds of them coming back are like 50:1; you may as well just throw Buehrle until he's fatigued and let him get through 5-6 innings, even if he gives up 12 runs. Past that, there will always be a starter who is on his throwing day - have him come in and get some work done in the game rather than on the side. Not really a huge deal if you ask me.

What you're saying makes sense, but according to Reinsdorf it sounds like they're calling up a pitcher anyway.

BTW - congrats on your 18,000th post!

Russel has kicked ass down in AAA in the pen. He has shown a lot of velocity out of the pen as well (mid 90's). The question is who the heck does he replace or does he just replace Ramirez (with the Sox carrying an extra pitcher)?

They aren't going to risk an arm they just signed to a long term deal who hasn't been thorwing very well anyway. This scenario will not play out.

so they won't let him throw his normal 100-110 pitches, even if he's getting shelled?

There's greater odds they will need to use another pitcher than there are they will run out of bench players.

Unless they call up Owens to PR.

Am I the only one who remembers Dye's brief stint at Shortstop in 2005 when we had 1 person get hurt and Crede got ejected?

That was 3 years ago. It doesn't happen too often. The starting rotation has had a lot more 3 IP or less starts than that in the 3 years.

Wasserman's faced 6 batters.

Yes, and that's why I said he hasn't been used that much. Plus he hasn't performed all that well in his limited role. Ehren is a better option in my mind than some others, but this fact was brought up at the close of ST and he was sent down anyway.

If the idea of Ramirez being sent down is the discussion I would think it would be for long term and not the Toronto visa issue as that's just a weekend deal. Why bring up another pitcher anyway? They all got that days rest on Thursday and the bullpen should be ready to go. We don't need another pitcher up so Wasserman should be staying for awhile longer unless unless unless :lolhitting :)

He's pitched in 3 or the team's 4 games since being recalled on the 27th, so he has been used quite a bit. He's retired 3 of the 6 batters he's faced, 1 via a sacrifice bunt and 2 via weak grounders to the left side. The 3 baserunners he's allowed have come via a walk (the plate was about 3 inches wide for that AB), a bunt base hit and an infield single. He's had some bad luck.

Thats not really an "If" this season, to be honest...I hope his last outing against Baltimore is more of a coming around for Mark.

In his last 27 innings, he's allowed 31 hits. That's just a little above his career average (1.15 H/9 in those 27 whereas he's at 1.04 in his career).

I'm not concerned about Buehrle in the least...so yeah, I'd say it's still if he gets hit around. And that's merely just this one outing too.

That doesn't happen often because we don't put ourselves in a position where it's possible. It's certainly not out of the question to have 2 different infielders hurt or ejected on the same day.

Wasserman is f***ing good. Let it play out a bit over the year and we'll see it.

I don't have a problem with Wasserman and since I can't see his games pitched I don't know how hard he gets hit, gives up duck snortters and all those other things so if you say he is pitching with bad luck on his side I have to defer. But, it is 637 PM CDT now and I stil don't see a roster move so I am believing this whole thread may be a moot point?!

Logan has been struggling a bit lately. Any chance he goes down because he's only a left handed specialist and it's only 4 games?

No, Logan's fine...Ozzie loves his matchups too much anyways, so I see no chance Logan would go down.

The only reason this is being discussed is because Alexei Ramirez cannot re-enter the United States upon leaving the country without a major hassle involved. If anyone goes down, it will be Alexei.
