I'm impressed that Poreda hasn't given up a walk in his last two outings.

It would be nice to see him start striking more people out though... and giving up a few less base hits. He's giving up over a hit per inning and he's not the kind of guy I'd expect to be a "pitch to contact" pitcher.

It's resulted in him having to pitch out of several jams.

So... Poreda has a good ERA but he clearly hasn't dominated this year yet.

Rice's peripherals are better, even if his ERA is a little higher.

Not bloody likely for McCulloch. One can't throw the same pitch over and over and expect to get guys out, he isn't Brandon Webb.

i think poreda had less than 1 K/IP in college last year, so even if he develops well, i dunno how much of a strikeout pitcher we can expect him to be unless the wish for better secondary stuff is granted. seems reasonable to expect more with that kinda fastball but i just dunno if it's gonna happen. we may have to settle for him issuing few walks and killing a lotta worms.

(i think the difficulty level of power conferences in college baseball is considered to be between low and high A ball, btw, so i dunno if we should read too much into his K numbers at great falls either.)

Explain more JPN!

You've seen him... what is his pitch repertoire?

Are you only seeing one or two pitches thrown consistently?

A note on the new Kanny shortstop... Luis Sierra.

He was pencilled in at leadoff tonight.

Singled in his first at-bat. Stole second. And stole third.

Interesting.

Did a little searching and can't find much on him other than what's listed at the milb.com link.

Jason Rice rebounded decently after a rough first inning in a 6-3 win for Kannapolis.

5 players for Kanny had multiple hit games.

And check out the reliever numbers.

Setup man Levi Maxwell went 2 innings for the hold: 0 runs, 0 hits. 3 K's, no BB's.

Closer Henry Mabee went 2 innings for the save: 0 runs, 0 hits, 4 K's, no BB's.

On the season Maxwell's ERA is now 0.49; Mabee's ERA is now 0.60.

I like both Maxwell and Mabee, especially Mabee. I think he's get closer potential. I hope both these guys continue to do well and maybe move up to Winston-Salem at the some point later this season and see how they handle the higher A level.

This Sierra guy at ss seems to be off to a decent start. I see he came from the DSL. Don't know anything about him. But he's only 20 and hopefully a good prospect. Looking at his numbers and BB/SO ratio it looks pretty good for a young kid.

Most every pitch is between 85 to 89 mph. Every once in a while, there is a pitch around 75. I'm seeing a lot of fastballs, with a split or sinker thrown in that isn't very affective. He wasn't helped tonight by Valido's cringe worthy throwing arm. The box score says 2 errors, but there were a few more that were called hits or fielder's choices. McCulloch isn't fooling many batters. I can't comment on location because I sit on the first base side, only high and low. A lot right down the pipe though.

Highlights from the other games...

Charlotte lost to Buffalo, 5-2. Of note...

Owens: 1-5, 3 K (he's still at .299)

Bourgeois: 2-4, BB, 2 CS (hitting .194, not starting well)

Fields: 0-3, BB, 2 K (avg down to .247)

Huffman: 2-4, 2B, RBI, R

*Lucy: 0-2, was removed from the game and replaced by Paul Philips - don't know why. Hmmmm.

Ohka (L, 0-5): 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

B-Ham lost to Mobile, 4-1. B-Ham just isn't hitting well as a team - Nanita is the only guy in the lineup with an average over .241. Of note...

Hudson: 2-4

Cook: 1-4, HR (hitting .226, not starting too well this year)

Armstrong: 1-4 (hitting .164)

Valido: 1-3 (and hitting .138)

McCulloch: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Winston-Salem beats Wilmington, 6-4. Highlights...

Orlando: 1-4, R, 2 K (hitting .207 in the leadoff spot)

Colina: 3-4, 2B, 2 R, CS (hitting .304, .892 OPS, but he's a 29-year-old minor league free agent pickup)

Allen: 1-4, R, 3 K

Cruz: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R

Poreda (W): 8 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Valido is pretty bad. Lots of errors, and he's hitting .136. I think he may not be long for the organization.

True, but he's only 22, so the organization may not give up on him yet. Although, he was available in the Rule 5 draft and nobody took him and the White Sox didn't protect him. The sad thing is that he does work counts very well.

It would be nice if, as a shortstop, he at least either hit well or played good D. He's on his third trip to B-Ham and he's hitting .138, which is pretty pathetic, even for a short timeframe. His previous stints he hit .208 (06) and .177 (07). And if his once-vaunted defense is slipping, what value does he have?

He still hasn't played a whole season in B'ham. He was demoted after a DL trip at midseason in 2006, and demoted at midseason last year. He either hits 1st or last in the order, mostly last. Like I said, he works counts well, just doesn't end up with a hit. Plus the official errors and all the mental mistakes in the field make it frustrating to watch him. Last night was especially ugly.
