According to my dad he heard a rumor on the radio that the sox might trade CQ for griffey jr. He claims it even came out of Kennys mouth. So whos the idiot my dad or KW for even thinking about this.

there's a thread in the Diamond Club that has ESPN's Steve Phillips proposing this trade in a magazine article. I imagine that is where this was coming from

Not a rumor, just Steve Phillips spreading his ignorance. The fact that this man carries the title of "expert" makes me sick.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

How do you restore a once-proud franchise? Glad you asked.

By Steve Phillips

The Reds haven't made the playoffs in 13 years, and a slow start this season cost GM Wayne Krivsky his job. So how can new boss Walt Jocketty build a new Big Red Machine?

Baseball Tonight analyst and former Mets GM Steve Phillips has a few ideas.

1. TRADE JUNIOR Yes, Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the few reasons to visit Great American Ball Park, but it's time to make the tough decisions. Griffey is signed only through this year, with a club option for 2009. As a 10-and-five player, he can veto any deal, but Chicago is a popular destination, so call White Sox GM Ken Williams, who's tried to get Griffey in the past, and ask for Josh Fields or Carlos Quentin. The Sox have a shot, and Griffey would be huge in Chi-Town. Then call up top prospect Jay Bruce, and put him in center for the next 10 years.

2. DUNN DEAL Use Adam Dunn's power as a chip to get pitchers. The Reds have a limited budget and an even smaller ballpark, so they must deal for arms and develop them. Dunn is in the last year of his deal, so maximize the return by giving an interested team a 72-hour window to negotiate an extension. Go to the Giants, who need offense to replace Barry Bonds, and ask for Matt Cain. Go to Toronto and request a package that includes Adam Lind and Dustin McGowan or Shawn Marcum. Call Cleveland, which is desperate for bats, and ask for Cliff Lee and one of these three: OF Franklin Gutiérrez and lefties Jeremy Sowers and Aaron Laffey.

3. BYE, BYE BRONSON In 2006, Bronson Arroyo was a great acquisition by Krivsky, but at age 31, and after throwing 656µ innings the previous three years, he's not the same pitcher. Get what you can, and get out from under his contract, because financial flexibility is critical for a small-market franchise. There are plenty of teams dying for starting pitching: Texas, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee and Baltimore come to mind. After trading Arroyo, bring up Homer Bailey, and give him the ball every fifth day. Scouts think he can be special; let's see if they're right.

4. CALL HANK Have owner Bob Castellini ring Hank Steinbrenner and tell him you've got a way to move Joba Chamberlain into the Yankees' rotation. Offer Jared Burton, who's whiffing hitters in bunches, and Jeremy Affeldt for Phil Hughes. Sell Burton as Chamberlain's eighth-inning replacement and Affeldt as the situational lefty the Yanks lack. Throw in Arroyo if they want. Make it an owners deal. Castellini and Hank will love it; GM Brian Cashman will hate it. The bottom line is that Aaron Harang, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Vólquez and Hughes would give Cincy four very different looks.

5. SHORT CUT The Reds have a tough decision when Álex González returns from his left-knee injury in a few weeks, because Jeff Keppinger has proved he can play shortstop every day. What to do? Trade utility man Ryan Freel to the Dodgers for Scott Proctor. LA can use a supersub, and Proctor can pitch the eighth inning if Burton is traded. Then Keppinger stays put and González becomes a defensive specialist—one with a lot of value if another club loses its starting shortstop.

lol he stated that as fact, as if Griffey is that easy to trade and KW would just dump his big offseason steal and future All-Star who is locked up cheaply for the next few years for another aging slugger, disregarding the fact that the team already has 3 of them and disregarding the fact that the team is loaded with OFs. Haha trade a young OF for an old one, I will sell you my 5 dollar bill for 20 bucks. And as if he was going to trade his 3B of the future for 1 1/2 years of Junior. If either of the 3B's go in a deal like that it would be Crede (the fact that such a deal would be pointless notwithstanding).

I mean, I've always had a big mancrush and obsession with Junior that borders on being a little weird, but come the hell on.

Sadly, the Junior for Quentin part might not be the dumbest part of the article. Why was Steve Phillips fired as the Mets GM? That guy is a bonafied baseball moron.

My favorite part of the article: 2. DUNN DEAL Use Adam Dunn's power as a chip to get pitchers. Go to the Giants, who need offense to replace Barry Bonds, and ask for Matt Cain.

I wouldn't be against some kind of trade with the Reds right now.

But obviously not CQ.

How bout Dunn and somebody else for Paulie or Thome. They can take pick.

What use would the Reds have for Thome?

Or Konerko seeing as how they have Votto. And I doubt Greg would like Dunn very much, he's a pure true outcome player similar to Thome. (though Jim hits for a higher average)

I'd say your dad because he believes the rumor is true.

I think this one's almost as classic. They refused to deal Hughes to get Johan Santana, but now they'll do it for Jared Burton and Jeremy Affeldt (basically two relievers)?

This guy gets paid way too much to do this.

Its almost as if Steve Phillips talks baseball in a green tint.

Wouldnt he be a funny member of this site if he came up with all of these ideas and posted them in green? I know I would laugh

What makes it worse is he was a former gm. I am having a hard time belivieing he was serious. I think sometimes ESPN likes to just screw with it's listeners.

Methinks that he ran out of material and was talking out of his posterior for the sake of having something to say.

There's no way that Kenny mortgages the future by dealing Quentin.

yeah Steve were going to trade away one of our best young players to get an even older (and often injured) player...... you just keep proving why you are no longer a GM.

If the Sox were going to trade Quentin to the Reds it sure as heck wouldn't be for Griffey. In fact, where would he even play? The Sox don't exactly have an opening on the current roster for another outfielder (unless they move one of there other outfielders and I wouldn't trade Swisher or Dye for Griffey).

Some combination of Bailey, Cueto, Volquez, and Phillips (probably 2 of them) would be the payment for a Quentin, given their current performance. Which is why it's never happening. They don't need a corner outfielder that badly, and we don't need an extra young pitcher that badly.

Besides Bailey, I disagree. I think any of them straight up for Q is a fair deal. That is no bash on Carlos either. I think he will be a stud.

Dye and a couple of prospects for Griffey?

I'm at least half serious. Griffey is a rental. They'd have an extra year of Dye under contract and they'd save quite a bit of money, assuming we'd pick up Griffey's full salary.

Plus if they really wanted to re-sign Junior next year for sentimental reasons they still could.

And it gets us out from under Dye's contract next year and allows us to move Quentin to right.
