Spiff
I don't know why Baker felt the need to bring this issue up, but I don't see why everyone automatically dismisses what he says. The sun is going to affect white people more than it is black people. Black people have more melanin on the surface of their skin, which will help keep the UV rays from damaging the skin (heating it up, causing sweat etc). However, people originally from colder and darker climates have lighter skin to let in more UV rays, so that they get enough vitamin D. It also leaves them vulnerable to skin damage (my fellow Irish know what I mean). I don't think the difference is that great, though. Many white baseball players, golfers, football players, etc have thrived during the daytime.
cwsox
Now I know where ShamME got his "racist" defense from. Dusty "the racist" Baker CK, bless you! a lot of very discredited bad eugenics biology (and far worse statements in light of the geome project) is floating around - and you went right to heart of it: idiots of a feather wear cubbie blue together. This isn't a first for the NorthSide's Skipper. When Baylor was hired I remember Baker stated that he was shocked the Cubs Organization hired a minority considering that the majority of their fanbase and the neighborhood surrounding the ballpark was white. Baker stated that he was unsure whether or not the Cub fans would embrace Baylor as their manager. If a white manager made these comments, he'd be f***ing fired already. Look at the pariah John Rocker became. Dusty Baker is a racist but since he's a minority, I guess it's ok .

It's not so much racism as much as it is just perpetuating a stereotype. What he said has been investigated and found not to be true.He does himself and fellow blacks, minorities a diservice by perpetuating the stereotype.Blacks don't dissapate heat any better than whites do,because of their skin color. I just find it ironic that a man like Baker, who prides himself on being active for civil rights, would repeat a silly stereotype that is counter productive to what he stands for. He's his own worst enemy. He should spend more time stressing the things that are similar in all people rather than how groups are different. We've only spent the last 50 yrs trying to express how one's skin color gives no one an advantage. I'm surprised he didn't excuse himself from the interview so that he could finish his watermelon, fried chicken and maybe teach a pasty Morrissey some rythym........... Dusty needs to stick to what he knows-cub baseball and their losing tradition........ Now THAT'S something that he's been quick to grasp!
