2nd actually. Jumped ahead of Morneau and Brown, and is only behind Hamilton (who has a ridiculous amount of 44 already).

Volquez 6-1, 1.12era, 48.1ip, 57 k or hamilton .293avg, 8hr, 44 rbi. The stud hitter or pitcher?

I listened to the game on XM radio and since it was in LA it was the Angel broadcasters. They were really praising Contreras saying they had never seen a pitcher able to control the split finger and locate it like Jose. Quentin of course was praised also. I am so pleasently surprised about Carlos Q and to thnk in ST he might not have even been considered for a role with the team.

They apparently missed all of the 56-foot forkballs that he threw three feet to the left of AJ. :D Seriously though, you've got to love Jose turning it around this year. This dude's arm has taken an absolute beating over the years and he keeps on like the Energizer Bunny.

As for CQ, what else can you say about this guy? He might end up as big as steal as Schueler grabbing Maggs off of waivers back in the mid '90s.

Maggs was a FA signing out of Venezuela right?

I thought that some other ML team had signed him, but cut him in their minor-league system. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Whatever the case, it was the best thing that Schueler ever did.

He tried out for the Astros and they passed. He had a tryout with the White Sox and the scout that was working him out showed up 4 or 5 hours late, but Maggs waited at the field for him. They signed him, he struggled initially, and was exposed to the rule 5 draft, but eventually became a very rich man.

What a trade that was for both teams! But gotta make you wonder about the Texas pitching scouts. They are always looking for starting pitching and they traded away Volquez and Danks, who they could definitely use now. Even Masset has probably performed better than McCarthy has been so far, granted hes been injured.

Contreras' forkball looked better than I've ever seen it last night.

I knew he was in for a good night when he pitched to Garrett Anderson in the 2nd inning. Jose was behind with a 2-1 count and threw a forkball that looked like a changeup until it dropped about a foot as it crossed the plate. That pitch would have fooled any hitter in baseball.

And then he threw several similar pitches later in the game that absolutely froze some of their hitters, including Vlad.

That was fun to watch.

If he keeps throwing that pitch with that effectiveness, he is going to have a very good year.

I agree, that was the right call. AJ is a solid contact hitter and regardless the game became a one run game and the best chance at getting out of that inning unscaved is by putting AJ on and getting a force at all bases. Quentin came up and took two close fastballs and than took advantage of Shields having to come in. It was just textbook.

Still...if AJ is hitting in front of Pujols, or Manny, etc., do you walk AJ to get to those guys?

CQ's about a half season from that treatment at his current pace.

I was thrilled they decided to bring him up with them loaded. The wife will testify, I said something along the lines of thank you, God this is stupid, thanks.
