Bench: Ken Griffey Jr., Ty Cobb, Brooks Robinson, Ernie Banks, Carlton Fisk, Frank Thomas (homer pick)

Note: I didn't mess with dead ball-era pitchers or I'd have put Cy Young and Walter Johnson as 1 and 2. So many honorable mentions and good players squeezed out I can't even name them all.

SS - Honus Wagner

2b - Joe Morgan

DH - Babe Ruth

CF - Willie Mays

RF - Ted Williams

LF - Barry Bonds

3b - Alex Rodriguez

1b - Lou Gehrig

C- Josh Gibson (if negro leaguers count, satchel paige was in a previous list so i included him, if not Berra slight edge over Bench. On that note I was tempted to put Oscar Charleston, but it seems difficult to put him over any of the OFers, while Gibson over Berra I am ok with)

SP - Walter Johnson

Cy Young

Bob Gibson

Greg Maddux

Lefty Grove

Bullpen - CP Mariano Rivera, Hoyt Wilhem, Tom Seaver (gotta have a long man)

I was tempted to put arod at short and brooks robinson at 3rd, but for the sake of a leadoff man I went with Wagner (and wagner was arguably a better player than robinson anyways)

BTW Knight...this seems like as good of an idea as any for the next "Lets make a list" ....if we have a long time it would be pretty sweet to do maybe a top 10 at each position and at the end compile it all....if you dont organize it, maybe i will

I'm sure you mean Brooks Robinson at third.

I find it extremely difficult to compare players I have seen play to those that came before my time. For example, I think Roberto Clemente was one the greatest players I have ever seen, but how can I pick him over the Babe. Then, where does Stan Musial fit in to the equation? In the Chicago athletes list, I only included players I have seen play.

If all players were thrown on the field today, with the talent they possessed/possess at the Major League level, I'd probably take David Eckstein over Honus Wagner.

I'm just saying, that dude would've struggled against global competition...

Let the beatings begin!

Who knows. This is a point no one could prove no matter what side of the argument you take. To counter what you are saying though, I think it is remarkable that Wagner put up those type of #'s during the dead ball era.

That's a valid argument, but it's questionable as well. Ty Cobb used to place buckets throughout the outfield, then hit baseballs INTO them in batting practice. Bigger, faster, stronger is one thing. Great hand - eye coordination is another. A great baseball player is a great baseball player regardless of era.

For the purposes of this thread let us just assume that the ballplayers of the past would've benefitted equally from the advantages they have today like better nutrition, workout regimes, film study, scouting reports, and steroids.

Also, if you want them on your roster, Negro Leaguers do count, but let's assume they would've still put up good stats in the majors (if slightly degraded).

I constantly toy with these lineups and consider a variety of them. I almost always put Ruth and Molitor in, because I'm very fond of them, but I like to consider defense and personality in constructing these lineups.

CF Richie Ashburn

2B Paul Molitor

RF Babe Ruth

1B Dick Allen

3B Chipper Jones

LF Willie Stargell

C Roy Campanella

SS Adam Everett

P

SP

Greg Maddux

Pedro Martinez

Dizzy Dean

Catfish Hunter

Bert Blyleven

RP

Scot Shields

Mike Marshall

Troy Percival

Billy Wagner

No consideration to the bench at this time.

SS Adam Everett

At least pick Ozzie Smith, Luis Aparicio, Omar Vizquel or Dave Concepcion if you're using fielding as your criteria.

They weren't one-dimensional, like Everett is.

I should've just gone:

C Piazza

1B Gehrig

2B Hornsby

3B Schmidt

SS Rodriguez

OF Ruth

OF Bonds

OF Mantle

:P

I was just spicing this particular lineup up. Besides, as Bill James cleverly put it: "If Ozzie Smith was half as good as Adam Everett, he was incredible." Of course, I don't believe Everett is quite that good, but that's not the point.
