Wanne
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 25, 2008 -> 05:41 PM) I don't buy into Wallace being a 3rd baseman, despite him playing a good chunk of this season over there. That's because he's really not. He basically played there so Ike Davis and Roling could play 1st with the outfield they currently have. He'll be a 1B at the next level IMO. R.J.
If we decide to reach for Bret Wallace I'll be absolutely furious. Wallace is a good prospect, ton of talent, obvious first rounder, but you have to do better at #8. It's just simple. If you're going to pick a Wallace- type (power hitting 1st baseman) that early in the draft, you'd rather go with Smoak or Alonso. I'm hoping that someone falls to us at number 8 who we can build around. I'd be thrilled with Smoak. I'd be happy with Skipworth. I'd be thrilled with Crow. I'd be happy with Beckham. Remember that a lot of people project Gordon Beckham as a 3B or at best a 2B, which takes his value down a bit. We should basically let the other 7 teams decide who we take with who falls to us. We shouldn't try and out think everyone with who we think is the safe pick.
JPN366
The White Sox clearly need a buzzworthy offensive prospect in the system aside from John Shelby. So, my vote is for Justin Smoak. Edited May 27, 2008 by JPN366
BaseballNick
I'd be happy with either catcher. Posey shouldn't be around that "late" so Skipworth looks like he's the prospect I want. I just love what a good hitting catcher brings to the offense, and how a good arm behind the dish keeps runners from advancing like the base paths are a merry-go-round. Since Beckham may not project as a MLB SS, I don't like using the #8 overall pick on him. A hitter like Smoak also appears to be the real deal. This franchise needs a legit position player at a key position.
