Nokona
It's so sad seeing these places I know and love being destroyed. My apartment (Iowa City) is in the 500 year plain and I am also under mandatory evacuation. My dad and I were going to rent a truck two weekends ago to get all my stuff, the truck wasn't available so we had to wait til Saturday. By then there was no way to get into IC. All I can do is hope and pray that too much of my s*** doesn't get destroyed.
whitesoxfan101
Boy, seeing the Wig and Pen like that makes it hit home. I have a couple friends in the IC, and everytime I've ever been there, we ended up hanging out at the Wig and Pen. Hopefully these floodwaters are finally done rising and the cleanup can begin relatively soon.

Gregory Pratt
I received this email from a good friend: Thanks for your concern, Greg. My family is ok, but many, many people here have not been so lucky. Lots of people were told when they bought their homes that there was no need for flood insurance because the water never gets this high. Levees are breaking, roads are closed, towns and hospitals are cut off. It's unbelievable. I look at all that is happening over there and I think to myself, "We might as well not have a government at all if we can not or do not give all we can to these poor people in Iowa." And I think it applies to our people in all disaster-struck regions.
Heads22
I will say, disasters like this just make me more impressed by my fellow Iowans. They were interviewing someone from Burlington on one of the networks and he said "everyone is here, helping their neighbors. If they're not, then they should be." No one's looking to blame any hydrologists or anything. They just want to get back to normal.

vandy125
Actually, they played right in Des Moines. Here is the article on it: Empty Stadium Baseball The stadium had been completely surrounded by water. For those of you who don't know, it sits right where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers meet up. It is a great location, but is right by all of that water. We saw a bit of water in the outfield on Friday, but that was about it, which is pretty amazing. Reddy
this is the saddest part for me... having performed on this stage and being close friends with the Riverside Theatre folk... I don't know what they're gonna do now... There's supposed to be seats and a stage in there... ugh.

maggliopipe
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 04:31 PM) What happens when the water recedes? OUCH!! Unreal. I used to drive up and down that highway heading to IC from Mt Vernon constantly. I'm assuming that's where the Cedar River crosses and if so, that should mean Solon is OK and Beef Days will still happen this year. Phew! Iowa City's a great town and I hope it's going to be ok. It's the one city in Iowa that has culture and isn't an industrial s***hole.

WilliamTell
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 09:40 PM) I'm guessing final damage totals will be a couple billion. Oh yeah, with the way almost all the bigger cities in Iowa were nailed, it's gonna be a couple billion. We didn't have drinkable water in Mason City for about a week, but we were pretty lucky even though we were the first "bigger city" in Iowa to get the flooding. But the flooding wasn't too bad with the Winnebago River compared to other towns that got the Cedar River and Iowa River, and now the Mississippi River. It's horrible to see some of these small towns like Columbus Junction (which sits at the merger of the Cedar and the Iowa) get nailed. Hopefully they can rebuild the town.
