Harry Chappas
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 28, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) Didnt the Sox lose 2 out of 3 to open the season at the Jake? Yep, lost the first two and won the third I believe and 2 of 3 this series = 3-1, no?

greg775
who would've thought on may 28th we'd be 6-3 against cleveland on the year Not me. Congrats, white sox. I also wouldn't have believed we've yet to play the Royals. Folks, if we dominate the Royals like they deserve to be dominated, we'll be in great shape in this division. Frankensteiner
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 28, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) Lee was in the minors last year, Westbrook is a 4+ ERA guy, Byrd is avg. I think our rotation matches up very well with theirs. There's no question they're overachieving. There's no question the Sox are overachieving as well. WCSox
QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 28, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) Agreed. Though I will say Cleveland will likely be there at the end. Their starting pitching is incredible, and if their offense gets hot, which I imagine it will, They will be tough to beat during that stretch. They have 6 legit starters. They have an impressive rotation, but Sabathia and Carmona are the only ones that scare me. Byrd is average, Westbrook is a little better than average, and Lee will be average again when he comes back down to Earth. Their bullpen will be their Achilles Heel down the stretch. Well their bullpen is just as talented as the Sox is, save Borowski (who should be DFA'ed by July 1st if he pitches like I think he will), so that's atleast what is going to make or break them. If it turns around, they'll perform pretty well; otherwise, they're a .500 team, like nearly every team in the majors with a mediocre bullpen. The Indians don't have anything close to a shut-down closer right now. We have two, and two solid left-handed specialists to boot.

I don't think Cleveland's bullpen is anywhere close to ours with or without Borowski. Linebrink and Jenks alone trump anything the Indians can throw out there in the 8th and 9th. Cleveland just looks like a bad team right now. Which I like to see. Their only chance is in June where they have one of the easiest schedules (23 games vs losing teams) in recent memory (KC, TEX, DET, MIN, SD, COL, LAD, SF, CIN). The 2 best teams they face record-wise are MIN and LAD, both 1 game above .500. In comparison, we have 12 games vs losing teams, and 10 games vs teams with over 30 wins (TB, CHC). That alone makes them one of the better bullpens in the league. Look at what Frankie and Shields alone have done for the Angels over the past five years. No offense to the Indians, who have some good young talent in their 'pen, but they don't even have a defined closer right now. Their former closer is washed up and their former setup man has been terrible this year and morphs into LaTroy Hawkins when he's been thrown into the closer role. The lack of defined roles in their bullpen is a huge negative.

RockRaines
I was looking at the indians MLB board, I think its funny that they are of the opinion that the Umps gave us all the breaks in this series. I would say the exact opposite, it was clear their pitchers were given a wider plate than ours. They are also complaining that Alexei never touched home on the sac fly, I think the replay showed pretty clearly that his hand touched it. tealeafreaderii
I don't think Lee will sustain his current pace, but he was 18-6 a couple years ago before he was hurt... Now that he is healthy he can be pretty good. i've been pretty happy the Sox have managed to avoid him thus far.
