So i just had a 30 minute coversation with White Sox scout Bill young and got his take on this. Lets just say he does agree with some of our statements cough cough Walker...

How did you get a chance to talk to him?

Talk to him about anything w/ the draft?

I just want to add something in terms of Walker and the entire orginization's approach to offense. A while back when the Sox were playing the Twins DJ shared a very telling remark (I think that's the first time I've ever heard DJ say something relevant other than being a little parrot to Hawk)...but he was talking about his short stint playing with the Twins. He mentioned something along the lines of he had a HR and a triple in the game...and late in the game when it was out of reach...he was batting and hit the ball to the right side (either a 1B or groundout that either advanced the runner or scored him)...and after the game when Kelly approached him he didn't say nice job in regards to his HR or triple....the only comment to DJ was his taking the ball the other way and advancing the runner. He said that is the approach they teach in the Twins orginization from the top on down. The pound it into your head from Day 1. Not sure if anybody recalls when he was mentioning that or not...just thought it was very telling...even though I doubt I EVER hear DJ say anything relevant for the next 2 years.

You may well be right on all this and quite possibly a change is needed simply for change's sake.

However, isn't the equation ass backwards? The GM built this team of plodders and slow starters and apparently Guillen has a ton of personnel input. It is well known some of these guys:

- start slow

- are prone to long slumps

- aren't selective at the plate

- hit into lots of DP's

- aren't the most gifted in baseball fundamentals

- get power greedy

It starts with the type of team that's built. How they have gone all this time without a legit leadoff hitter I'll never know.

Good points, but keep in mind that the same formula of slow, home-run-happy, poor-base-running players with crappy fundamentals scored a ton of runs for the Sox from 2000-2003. I don't see a huge difference between Thome/Paulie/JD/Crede and Maggs/Lee/Valentin/late-career-trying-to-hit-500-HRs-Frank. They're all basically the same type of player: They hit lots of homers and doubles, but don't steal/run the bases well and can't bunt to save their lives.

What I do see is an age difference. Thome is in the twilight of his career, Paulie and JD have been fighting nagging injuries (that age often induces) for the past calendar year, and Crede had major back surgery in the off-season (another wear-and-tear issue). This same offensive core went from bad-ass in early/mid 2006 to mediocre by the end of 2006, bottomed out last year, and haven't made much of an improvement since.

But I'm still shocked that Swisher and Cabrera, who both put up very solid numbers over the past couple of seasons, have been so bad. Especially Swisher. I'm beginning to think that the clubhouse atmosphere may also just be really poor. Even if Walker is a crappy hitting coach, it shouldn't negatively effect veteran players with several years of successful hitting THAT much. There may just be a going-through-the-motions atmosphere. And that may explain why Quentin, who came into this season fighting to keep his ML career alive, hasn't succumbed to it (i.e., he's actually motivated).

I work for the Montgomery Biscuits. We didnt talk about the draft at all. We talked about Uribe, A-Ram, some trades, Walker etc...

He is an awesome guy.

I remember him telling that story as well, and specifically that comment.

Yeah he is Kenny's #1 guy. He had a White Sox and Yankees World Series ring on too. It was very nice. He also told me he was the man scout behind the Danks trade.

Good info, thanks. Was he scouting a pro or minor league game when you spoke with him, or?

Pro. I work for the AA affiliate for the Tampa Bay Rays. There are about 15 scouts here this series. Cameron Maybin is playing against us too, and he was talking about him quite a bit to me. It was super cool though, it was just him and I talking for like 30 mins.

Anything you want me to ask him?

I wouldn't want to put him or you on the spot. But if it comes up, I'm curious where Williams has him scouting over the next few weeks ... anything special ... or just normal assignments. If he's scouting AA games it sounds like normal scouting rotation.

His specific take on the Walker situation would also be interesting but again, I don't want to put him or you on the spot.

He didnt give me any particulars but he did say he has a Nashville trip coming, and then Charlotte.

It was cool talking with him because he talks like us. Hes just a fan with a big league job! We just talked about the team a lot, and paulie's struggles and stuff. He had just got off the phone with AJ too when i was talking to him lol. Also said Jim Thome was the nicest guy in baseball

why would you say this? do you think he would appreciate you insinuating walker needs to go? I don't know maybe nobody cares anymore, maybe its no big deal.

I didnt say he thinks he needs to go. He just said he thinks he might go. When we were talking about Ozzie's rant. He didnt say anythign negative about anyone.

Fukudome would have played CF, thus the Swisher trade wouldn't have happened. Why do you think anybody would want our garbage?? These trade idea are becoming more and more absurd.

I understand, but if Fukudome didn't want to come here for 2 reasons: 1, he wanted to be an organization's first Japanese player. 2, he didn't want to play CF but RF instead.

Well, Crede isn't exactly garbage. Practically all his errors have been throwing, and so that can easily be fixed- just don't be so non-chalant. And, he's still hitting, what, .270, which is better then what their current 3B is giving them. PK could turn it around and I bet is still intriguing to most teams. Swisher- well, yeah, you're right, he's awful.

BTW, I noticed somebody mentioned Juan Pierre. That wouldn't be a bad idea, at all, actually. Sure, his OBP isn't great .350, but he has 20 SBs and his BA is around .280. Maybe it'll take Swisher and Uribe, maybe another prospect, too.

oh and on the walker situation. He didnt say his take on it, just he thinks he will be gone soon

More good info, thanks again.

Hah ... Walker is probably as sick of the whole situation as many of the fans are of his presence. Would not shock me if he steps down and is reassigned.

Jerry Owens is playing for Charlotte tonight, thank f***ing God.

I laugh at deals saying something like Konerko, Crede and Swisher for Kemp. Nothing makes sense quite like dealing 3 starters.

What makes even less sense is LA dealing Kemp for two guys who can't hit their weight, and a rental player who hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire.

Ned Colletti loves his veterans, so I would think he'd do it just to fill a hole at third base.

I just LOVE the idea of dealing Swisher when his value is at his ABSOLUTE LOWEST.

That and the fact PK is 10 and 5.

While Colletti loves his veterans, I doubt he's stupid. So far Dewitt has outproduced Crede, and Loney, Kemp, and Eithier have outproduced Konerko and Swisher. And when I say outproduced, I mean offensively and defensively.

If LA does eventually trade one of their OF's, I think it'd be Eithier before Kemp. Of course they'd love to unload one of Pierre or Jones first, but it will be tough for them to do that unless they throw in lots of cash and take them for practically nothing.
