So would Wasserman get sent down, Loaiza becomes the long - man, and Masset moves into Wasserman's role in the pen perhaps?

That makes complete sense.....

Why on earth would the Sox sign him?

Well it's been pretty obvious they really like Masset and the work he's done this year, and we've seen him a few times in the 6th and 7th now. By doing this, you can send Wassermann back to triple a, give the spot Masset used to have (long relief) to Loaiza, and use Masset in the 6th or 7th if you need him or if Dotel needs a night off. Makes sense to me.

This has got to be an insurance move, or shoring up Charlotte. I don't see where the guy fits on our roster right now, unless someone is hurt.

Well, I've been of the opinion that Danks has to be limited to about 160 or so innings this year including the playoffs, otherwise you really risk pushing him too hard and having him go down for an extended period. He's pitching well enough that stopping him might well require shutting him down for a couple weeks. This would be another option for a couple of #5 starter type spot starts.

Maybe he is replacing Masset and Masset will be sent down to get stretched out. I have been pretty impressed with him so far this year so stretching him out and giving him a chance could allow us to trade a starter for some offense?? I'm not saying its a good idea.. the thought did cross my mind though.

What is odd is why wouldn't other teams be able to offer him a starting rotation spot.

Really low risk / high reward.......

Look at he Yanks, sign him and move Joba back to the pen.

Maybe he really liked it here and wanted to return for some reason.

Hell, he would at least be a .500 pitcher guaranteed in the NL.

For an inning or two, Loaiza could be as effective as anyone out of the pen

Hell, with the way he performed here last time, unless there was some other chemical reason helping him, I wouldn't blame him for going back here to try to rescue his career either.

Now all we need is to have him put together another 20 game winning season and then swap him to the Yankees for a pitcher that they've soured on (That guy Hughes is starting to fit the bill....)

The Yanks sure loved Loaiza when he was there. Has anyone actually seen Loaiza pitch this year? His fastball was in the mid 80s when I saw it, and he had very little in terms of offspeed pitches.

The rumors must be true, he was brought in to hit.

Right, right.

Seriously though, didn't Ozzie call him out for his lack of preparation or for being lazy, or something along those lines?

I don't remember that. This was all I could find:

Guillen had been disappointed with the way the 21-game winner from last season has gone about his business on the mound this spring, and expressed that after his start last week.

Is that what you mean? Eh...by Guillen's standards, it's almost encouragement. :D

Wasn't he injured?

Maybe he is done then as I have not seen him but was going by last season more than this when he was at least servicable.

Serviceable? His ERA was close to 9 with the Dodgers.

I'd rather have Wassermann on the team than Loaiza. I saw him pitch a few games for the Dodgers the past few years, and his stuff was below average. I like Loaiza though, so I hope he can revive his career.

I think Loiaza is a beter option. he can do long relief with Massett, releif or spot start when needed. During the heat of a long pennant race I am thinking a guy like Loiaza can really help.

Long relief would be my guess. Regardless, it never hurts to have some insurance. And at the league minimum is a plus.

Absolutely

Just about anything would be an improvement over Wassermann.
