You deserve props, as you were always saying he'd come around.

I thought he could bounce back and be a decent #3 or #4 starter. Basically giving you Garland-like numbers. I'm actually shocked at his sometimes dominance this season.

I was hoping for a 4.5 ERA, at best. He made me panic at the beginning of the season. But I'll be damned, he's lights out.

I don't recall how I was all offseason on Contreras but I definitely recall wanting to get any body with a shred of talent for him while also eating some of the contract. He's definitely figured some stuff out.

I do also recall having a conversation with one of the posters on here about how these Cubans really tend to reinvent themselves...Contreras has gone from a power pitcher who looked for the strikeout to a groundball machine. There's an article up on rotoworld about how he has like 60% groundballs this year and his control has been awesome. He's generally been a little wild every year he's pitched, but his control is the best it's been in his career...

2004 - 4.4 BB/9

2005 - 3.3 BB/9

2006 - 2.5 BB/9

2007 - 3 BB/9

2008 - 2.3 BB/9

...and the only year that's even close is his 2006, but he was allowing much more homers than too, presumably because he was allowing more flyballs too. The 3 homers he's allowed is a bit crazy, but he has been absolutely fantastic thus far. Let's hope he can keep it up and continue pitching his ass off, because pitching is easily the biggest reason this team is in first place.

The main thing that stands out from that 2005 season was the camaraderie in the clubhouse and the loosey-goosey attitude the team had. Watching tonight's celebration at home plate reminded me so much of that 2005 team. I have the end of that 15th inning Tivo'd and it is just something else to watch. A few things to note...the 1st man to greet Paulie down that 3rd base line was Ozzie. He gave the big ole' high five and everything. Next in line was Swisher. Waving the towel around and being the personality we all know he is. Then you've got guys like OCab, Alexei, and Quentin jumping in the the middle of the pile. Quentin throwing punches at Paulie's ribs was hilarious as well. Ozuna then treating Paulie like a horse giving him multiple ass-slaps. JD and AJ then attack him outside the batters box and in the dugout, telling him something and pointing to the scoreboard (would love to know what they were talking about there). Then you see Brian and Burls doing something on the side, laughing and pushing eachother. That reminded me a lot of Rowand and BA in the dugout when Pods hit the walk-off. "No way! NO WAY!" Then Thome caps it off with the hug coming down the steps into the clubhouse. Hell, even Gavin was all over PK. And then of course, Toby comes in with the shaving cream pie to the face.

This season has been very fun to watch, even with all of our offensive struggles. This is a very fun team to be a fan of, and I'm hoping we can keep it up en route to a 2005 Part Two. I think Tony said it best in the game thread...this looks like a very fun clubhouse to be around.

you know I thought the same exact thing after the Q walkoff against LAA, but then came Tampa Bay, I realized those moments are just that, moments, and consistency has to come from many different stars aligning rather than a single act, WO homer, manager tirade on TV, etc.

The way we're playing makes me want to watch this:

2006 Opening Day

I'm a fan of all Chicago teams, sans the Cubs, but the Sox team is by far my most important. I live and die with the Sox, and any video of 2005 just gives me goosebumps over and over again. Here's to hoping 2008 ends much like 2005... :cheers

I am not going to get ahead of myself, but I have a WS '05 banner hanging up in the corner of my basement (where I am now), and the other wall of the corner is empty. Another gray WS 08 banner would look pretty nice up there, no?

I would rather it be a SB '06 portrait though. My wife got me something like that for Christmas, a bunch of Bears players in various poses, with 55, 96, 33, 76, 8, 30, 54, and 57 all on it. If you're as big of a Bears fan as me, you recognize those numbers and don't need to be told their names.

I gotta be honest, I didn't post in this thread until now because I thought it was bulls***. However, today's win was the first one we had this year that, all things considered, gave me that feeling I had in 2005 (and the first 3 and a half or 4 months of 2006 really). Damn, I missed that feeling and games like that.

I think the only real similarities between 2005 and 2008 are that neither team was expected to win the AL Central going into the year, and both teams at this point were/are pretty strong favorites to stay in first place for the rest of the year.

The 2005 season was a truly magical year. When it was over, I wrote a 17-page ode to the season just so I wouldn't forget it.

Here's a few highlights.

1. The Sox had the lead in their first 37 ballgames. It was reminiscent of the 35-5 start for the 1985 Tigers. By the end of that stretch, I believed the 2005 team could win the World Series.

2. There was the silly Sox Haikus thread on this site that generated dozens upon dozens of entries. I wrote a ton myself. Here are a few I still like.

Great Ozzie man say,

Pitching and defense the way,

To World Series play.

Ya gotta believe

In this torrid White Sox team

To go all the way!

Lee for Podsednik?

Add AJ and El Duque

Play Ozzie ball. Win!

Thirty-fifth and Shields

US Cellular team fields

Baseball's supreme team

US Cellular,

Not Wrigley Field, is home to

Chicago's best team

All the way this year

Eighty-eight year jinx is over

White Sox are World Champs

3. Sox won opening day 1-0. Sox won first game after All-Star break 1-0. Sox won WS clinching game 1-0.

4. Sox had best record in 1-run games, best road record, best overall record, led wire-to-wire.

5. After the ASB, Sox swept 4 games at Cleveland. Later, after Cleveland got ridiculously hot themselves (24-4), Joe Crede burried their comeback with a walk-off HR at the Cell to win 7-6 in 10 innings.

6. Jose Contreras emerged mid-season into the rock of the pitching staff. Finally, we had a #1 guy. Everyone else lined up perfectly after that.

7. Frank Thomas only got about 100 ABs on the year, but hit 12 HRs in that span, giving us a big spark. His last games as a Sox player.

That's just some of it. Add your own. I won't add the playoff memories here.

This team still has a long way to go to match the magic of 2005. But I will say they have a chance. Good pitching always gives a team a chance.
