Frankensteiner
On the bright side, and I would have never believed this until checking, Buehrle now has more QS than either Vazquez or Contreras.

Oh I agree with that. I actually thought we'd have a lot of trouble in this series, I just wanted one win going in. The thing that makes so frusterating is we should have at least got that win with the way Buehrle pitched today. Greg Hibbard
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) Yes because it's too much to ask to not get swept by a team 11 under on the road. Either that 11 under team is in no danger of making a run, or that 11 under team is not really an 11 under team. You can't have it both ways. Either Detroit is bad and it's incomprehensible that the Sox could lose this series, or Detroit is better than their record, capable of an extended run and it's understandable how the Sox could get swept. Nice try. They are obviously capable of making a run, as their offense is pretty good and they just swept us, but it doesn't change the cold hard fact they they were 11 games under .500 and barely out of the cellar 72 hours ago. Are the Tigers your normal 11 (well now 8) games under .500 team? Of course not, they don't suck. Doesn't change the fact that being swept by them is inexcuseable, especially when you only gave up two runs in one of the games.

The biggest reason my expected value of the series was so low is if it looks too good to be true, it probably is, and that was the case with the Sox the last week. We're a decent, MAYBE pretty good team, but this series just smelled like one where we'd lay an egg coming in. But just because I expected us to do bad doesn't make it excuseable, it just means I'm a pessimist that was unfortunately proven to have merit for his feelings the last 3 days. BobDylan
QUOTE (VAfan @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) The worst thing from something like this is that it could wake up a sleeping giant. After this series, I now expect the Tigers, not the Indians or Twins, to become our chief rivals for the division crown. Cabrera hit. Verlander pitched a gem. Rogers killed us, again. Thames hit a 3-run HR. They outpitched and outhit us. We still have a lot of factors giving us an edge. 8-game lead. More home than road games left. Etc. But we'll need to return the favor when they come to our house. In the meantime, the best way to erase this is to kick some NL ass. I agree. I would have been happy with a split against the Twins last series. It was the Tigers series I was worried about. I really wanted the White Sox to push them further into the ground. Didn't happen. July will be a pivitol month for them. They have an easy schedule and they need to get close to 20 games over .500 after that month and create some separation. Especially if they're going to continue having let down series like this. Edited June 12, 2008 by BobDylan

Long, extended losing streaks happen to world series winning teams. Check out the 05 Sox's August record. I believe they were something like 9-19. This is 3 games - let's be real. If they so much as even split the next six games I'm going to START to get concerned.

The other big problem with this series is if we win 2/3 against the lousy Pirates and Rockies (certainly acceptable), it means we will have actually gone a game under .500 during our easiest stretch schedule wise of the season so far at 4-5. That certainly wouldn't take away the great 7-0 homestand, but it would remove all forms of the momentum of it. Be nice if we do better than 4-2 on this homestand though. greg775
To let Detroit back into the race with three just awful efforts from almost everybody outside of Mark Buehrle is inexcuseable. Even if we had won one out of three it'd have been no big deal, but we did the one thing we couldn't afford to, and that was get our ass swept. I don't know if "inexcusable" is the right word. Baseball is a marathon. We kicked ass on that homestand. We sucked on the road in Detroit. It's so early in the season, this series meant nothing. Yes it probably "woke up" Detroit sort of. Detroit will only stay woke up if the Tigers' keep it going next series. Face it ... we have a bizarre baseball team. We need to pound the baseball at home again and start consistently winning series rather than just sweeping people and/or getting swept. You couldn't possibly have thought we were going to run away with the division based on a home sweep of the Twinks and Royals????? We've had too many s***ty series to think we're going to run away with anything. Edited June 12, 2008 by greg775

fathom
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 12:15 AM) They had a bad series at a bad time. It happens. In their last 10 games, the Sox are 7-3. They need to get fat against these NL teams. The Sox still find themselves with a decent lead in a bad division, so racking up some wins against inferior teams is vital. Get it done. I had such a bad feeling about this Tigers series. We have to play better tomorrow, especially facing a very good pitcher on Saturday. witesoxfan
There are some absolute gems in this thread. I kinda figured I'd come on the board and see people looking over the cliff. My favorite is how 3 games could cost the Sox the season. The Tigers won 4 of 5 games in the 3rd week of April, 4 in a row in the 4th week of April, and 8 of 10 from April 21st to May 1st, including a sweep of the Yankees IN NEW YORK. They were just waking up, right? Right - they've gone 15-22 since that time period, which is a 96 loss pace, which includes the sweep of the White Sox (meaning before this series, they'd lost 22 of 34); currently, they are on a 91 loss pace even after their series with the Sox. Do I think they could get hot and win like 20 of 23? Absolutely...their offense is still one of the best in the AL. It doesn't change the fact that it's just not goddamn likely. Bad teams are generally bad teams for a reason, and the Tigers team ERA of 4.74 is a huge reason why. Add to it that their starter with the lowest ERA is Armando Galaragga and their starter with the second lowest ERA coming into today - Bonderman - is done for the year. That rotation is one of the worst in all of baseball. Also, while I understand that being swept can be a bit of a momentum killer, it can also just be a bit of a humbling experience for a team that's pretty young overall. And going 4-2 over the next 6 wouldn't be a momentum killer...it would suck, but it wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm sugarcoating the s*** out of this, and I realize that, but it's not the end of the world that the team got swept. Just suck it up and move on. The bullpen is allowed to give up a run every now and then.
