NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) Probably headed there over the weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to see, bars to go to etc.? Boston is a fun town, one of my faves. As far as daylight activities go, you can follow the historical "trail" through town. The "trail" is a painted yellow line that runs through downtown and up the Charleston, stopping at all sorts of nifty historical spots on the way. Great way to learn the town. You can get a pamphlet on everything on the walk, available at places all over town, hotels. etc. Lots of great restaurants. You really can't go wrong. Pricey though. For good eats cheap, go to the Italian part of town (north of downtown, as I recall), and just wander into a cafe. For nighttime stuff, I don't really know any specific bars, but walk around any Irish neighborhood and just wander into one. Also, if its your thing (wasn't mine, but, long story), you can hop on a ghost tour that is actually kind of fun. Also, you should see a game at Fenway if you can. I've been there twice in the last two years and loved both trips. Boston is a very cool city. Definitely check out the the Freedom Trail - it's very cool for history buffs and worth checking out as a way to see the downtown area, though I recommend skipping the part that goes all the way across the river to the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill, unless you're really interested in checking those out. It's sort of a long hike (at the end of an already decent hike through parts of downtown) and the ship is ok to stand on but costs money to go under the deck and Bunker Hill is just an obolisk on top of a hill which seems to always be closed if the weather is more than 60 degrees. As far as restaraunts and bars, if you do check out the Bunker Hill monument, grab a beer at the Warren Tavern, one of the older bars in the nation, which is just a few blocks away. If you stick around the touristy spots downtown, I'd recommend the Union Oyster House for food - I think the best clam chowder I've ever had. Basically there's a whole strip of bars right there by the Government Center and Faneuil Hall that we bar hopped all night and had a great time (they're all old-timey places, at least in decoration). The Green Dragon is there too, supposedly where the Sons of Liberty planned the Boston Tea Party. I think the best part of that bar was that it was 8 or 9 at night, we'd done a fair amount of drinking so I was a little tossed, I sit down at the bar and 5 min later Benjamin Franklin sits next to me. No lie. At first I was confused, but then I remembered there are all sorts of tour guides that dress up and then hit the bars when they're done working. Just keep in mind that after like 6 or 7 every bar has a 5 dollar cover, which is insane to me, and I made sure to let just about every door man what a rip off that is. The Black Rose is also pretty good, though kinda touristy, with excellent authentic Irish food. Lastly, if you have time and enjoy Sam Adams, the brewery tour is pretty cool. It's short and quick and they give you some decent sized samples.
FlaSoxxJim
I'm another one who really loves Boston. The Freedom Trail is a great way to see the town, and it passes by enough pubs that it easily doubles as a pub crawl route. Really amazing history to see – the grave sites of Samual Adams, Crispus Attucks and others, the Old North Church ("One if by land, and two if by sea"), the site of the Boston Massacre, etc. Anyone into colonial American history will love it. Aussies will enjoy drinking through it. The best beer bar in Boston – and one of the best anywhere, imo, is Anam Cara on Beacon Street. Unbelievable selection on draft and in bottles, and one of the best Belgian selections I've ever seen. The Sam Adams Tour sounds pretty cool, we might try to do that first, and then maybe hit up the Freedom Trail in the afternoon, before hitting up some bars at night, will definitely check out Anam Cara knowing your tastes in beers over the years Jim. Most of the other guys who want to go just want to check out Boston and especially for the atmosphere that it'll be like if the Celtics end up winning the title. Hell, they might even have a parade on the weekend possibly, which would be pretty cool to see (even though I'm not a fan of them).
Milkman delivers
You guys sound like huge tourists (which, I guess you are). Just go to Faneuil Hall, and go to those bars. Here's a hint. Go to Sissy K's, as they have 1 dollar drafts. Get there before they start charging the cover, get hammered for cheap, and then wander off throughout Faneuil (or wherever you end up). There's plenty of bars and restaurants right there for your amusement.
DBAHO
Re-Bumping this, didn't end up going in June, but am taking the Bus there tomorrow morning for a weekend. Hopefully it's not to cold up there. We're trying to find a really good college bar if anyone knows?
daa84
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) Re-Bumping this, didn't end up going in June, but am taking the Bus there tomorrow morning for a weekend. Hopefully it's not to cold up there. We're trying to find a really good college bar if anyone knows? well I just spend a year there for grad school so I can help... Im sure there are some in cambridge that have like equations on the walls and s***, but there are a bunch of good bars near Fenway...Lansdowne street has a bunch of college hot spots, but there are some clubs mixed in there, but Jake Ivory's is a pretty cool piano bar...If you are big into sports bars the Cask'n Flagon is a legendary bar that is basically built into fenway, and there are a couple others right there that are really kinda cool, Game On, Boston Beer Works...Sticking closer to downtown, McFadden's near Fanueil Hall is good, but thats a chain bar so it might not be as local as youd hope.....The strip of bars that someone mentioned earlier near Fanueil and Govt. center is probably referring to Purple Shamrock, Bell in Hand and a couple others...its north Govt. center on the way to the North End....those bars get alot of college students, but you'll get more of a mix since they are downtown...either way they are pretty fun, but probably will have a cover.....there are alot of others near Fanueil Hall also, including a bunch of pretty fun and cheap Irish Bars....Out by the prudential building on Boylston is Lir, Whiskey's and a few others that will get a bunch of Northeastern and BU students... If you find yourself out near Allston (B train on the Green line), White Horse on Brighton ave. is always college kids, as is Joshua Tree out on Commonwealth ave. (mainly BU students) In terms of other stuff to do...Freedom Trail is great, it will be cold though so bundle up. If you don't want to do the entire trail I suggest truncating it...Walk through the Boston Gardens (though this time of year its not as nice as summer)...Cheers Bar is on Beacon right there, and The state house is a bit farther down...The Sam Adams grave and other Graveyards are on Tremont Street as you walk from the Common down toward Govt. Center and Fanueil Hall...Along that way you will also see the Old Post Office, the Old state house and a few other things...Fanueil hall itself was the old meeting ground and to be honest don't even bother going in the actual building unless you want a Big Papi Tshirt....Quinzy Market is right next to it and is a massive Food Court...lots of good stuff in there....From there Id walk through the North End (north of Govt. center)...Its the old Italian neighborhood and has tons of good restaurants and Pastry shops...There are better Pastry shops, but Mike's and Modern Pastry are the most crowded and famous, and right on Hanover street in the middle of it all...I suggest a Mike's Canoli, they are incredible....The Old North Church and Paul Revere's house (and I believe grave) are not far at all...from there if you want you can walk up to the Harbor and see the USS Constitution from a distance or you can walk over, but as someone else said, Id avoid going...nothing too great. Sorry, I intended to only write a few sentences and i got going i guess, hope that helps Edited November 21, 2008 by daa84
DBAHO
We're basically staying on Hemenway Street right near Fenway in the Back Bay area. I imagine we'll probably want to stick pretty close to that area. So will definitely check out the places on Lansdowne Road. EDIT: Anywhere that you can recommend to eat for dinner round that area also?

EDIT: Anywhere that you can recommend to eat for dinner round that area also? Boston Beer Works has decent food and will be right around the corner from you. If you are heading Faneuil Hall just get food from the Market Place stalls. And although it's somewhat more upscale than some college-type bars, I cannot emphasize what a disservice you will do yourself as a drinker of good beer if you do not get to Anam Cara. DBAHO
QUOTE (daa84 @ Nov 23, 2008 -> 08:52 PM) Lemme know how that trip went Trip was good. Was absolutely freezing on the Saturday, we walked from South Station to Quincy Market at Fanueli Hall and had some lunch (New England Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl). Then we walked to Beacon Hill, looked in the Cheers Pub, went to another pub, and then back to our accomodation on Hemenway. Then we went out to some bars around Fenway, and ended up in the city centre and in a few bars then. Actually was talking to a guy at the bar at 1 place about American Sports for 2 hours, even if he was a Cubs fan. Yesterday, we went to Havard in the morning, and then yesterday afternoon we were going to go to the Boston Tea Party Museum, until we found out that it was burnt down a few years ago. Oops. I liked the city, but it was just WAY too cold for me there. Would like to go back in the Summertime.
