PALEHOSED ASSASSIN
This flew under my radar on July 6th in Deluca's Sun-Times column: The San Diego Padres have no shot of climbing into contention in the National League West, but general manager Kevin Towers says he is looking to add payroll and acquire talent for his team, which is moving into a new downtown ballpark next season. Towers plans to start rebuilding before the trade deadline July 31. ''We'll be just as much of a buyer, possibly before the end of July, as we are a seller,'' he said. Reports indicate several players--including the White Sox' Magglio Ordonez, who can become a free agent after next season--have passed word along to Padres personnel that they would like to play in San Diego. ''I can't mention names, but it seems like every place we go, I hear it from our clubhouse that so-and-so wants to play in San Diego, which is an advantage to us,'' Towers said. ''They might be willing to take a little less to play in San Diego because of the new ballpark and our locale. ''Players know we have won before. And with the new ballpark, we'll have a chance to win again.'' Do the White Sox have the ability to add an option year or two for Mags after next season? Jim Fainter
Sure, they have the ability. But he is due $14 MM next year and he's hitting .280. No reason to panic and throw more money at him. As good as he is, there is a limit on how much you can pay a player. If Maggs wants to play hard ball the Sox next year, we can always play Reed at a minimum contract. If he cuts down on his swing maybe. He needs to shorten it up. His swing is longer then hell. Joe B has light tower power.....but if you can only show it off every now and then, what's the point? With the swing he had when he came up, he would have hit like .220 25 50 tops. He cuts down on his swing, and those numbers will increase dramatically. Carlo Paz
Yep. Borchard needs to take some lessons in "short and quick". Look at Aaron Rowan since he's been back. Dangerous.
Jim Fainter
I don't think there is any point in talking about Borchard until he proves he can hitt AAA pitching.

I'll be very surprised if he makes it to the ML for any length of time, let alone becomes a star player.

I think the bottom line anymore IS the bottom line. I just don't see teams paying the big bucks we have seen in the past years. Everyone is financially struggling including the Steinbrenner Bombers. Maggs is a great player, but so is Juan Gonzalez, Luis Gonzalez, Vlad Guerrero, et al, You Name Them. 14 million from the Sox is a ton of money and I don't see anyone giving him more and maybe there is less to give. San Diego can say all they want, but new ballpark or not I am not sure they have the kind of money it wil take to sign all these free agent possibilities they talk about. Plus they need to be careful they don't get charged with tampering.
southsider2k5
The thing that surprises me about this is that none of the bottom feeder Chicago columnists, (I am looking in your direction Kotex-Boy) have picked up on this. It has been a golden opportunity to tear the White Sox up, instead the papers have pretty much been basking in our glory lately. I just have this feeling like Wild E Coyote as he looks up and sees the safe falling at his head.
cwsox
why would Mags want to play for the Padres? why would anyone want to play for the padres? was Mags swept off his feet by their wonderful road uniforms when they were at the Cell? does he hate our singing O-E-O that much? The funniest part of the Roadrunner & Coyote cartoons is when the rock/safe/piano/etc is falling towards Coyote's head, he holds up that little umbrella for protection. too funny. aboz56
If he bolts after next season, we'll simply use an outfield of Lee, Reed and Borchard in 2005 and have cap room to sign a good free agent. Add to the fact that we have Buehrle through 2006 as well as Wright, Garland, I think we'll be alright if he leaves.
Guest wsc425
Maggs didn't say anything in the article of that sort.

I have just about all but given up on Joe B. Reed we still have time with, and he's developing a lot quicker then Joe B. did at AA. But inall honesty, they both might not make it. PALEHOSED ASSASSIN
The last time I checked, the climate in San Diego is much better than Chicago every month except July and August. They've also been to the World Series twice in my lifetime (84 and 98). However, the White Sox won just as many World Series Games in my lifetime. I still think he's nuts though - I love the O-E-O.... Magglio...... Magglio..... Don't-cha go!

Why do you think I remained here after I got out of the Corps 6 years ago? The cost of living SUCKS and jobs pay less, but I'll deal with it just to remain as long as I could. I can't take Chicago winters anymore. My skin chaps so bad, especially my hands and I can't play sports at all.

SweetJfour
I say if the Sox make the moves they need to make this year to provide us with a winner and still fall short of the playoffs, then you seriously have to consider letting certain players walk. Maggs would be no exception! The team in 2000 had a lot less talent on paper and was significantly less expensive than the direction their going right now. If he wants to play hard ball let him, but I'm not so sure Joe Borchard is the answer yet!!!!!!
Big Irish
Welcome sweetJfour. Good point. They will need to take a long hard look in the mirror if we fall short of the playoffs this year. Maybe even if we don't make the series. After all KW is going for it?!
