Chisoxfn
Would have liked to see Shelby or Poreda instead of Getz (just because Getz isn't that "star" type of prospect). Interested in seeing Richard again.
scenario
Shelby probably would have gone, but he had a long cold streak that killed his average... knocked it down into the .250's. He's just starting to rebound. And I think Getz is proving to be a much better player than many fans expected. Look at his track record... he played most of his draft year season in Kanny and hit .304. Went to AA in his first full minor league season - and that was the only place he stumbled. Then the last two years, including this one, over a .300 average... a good OBP. Shoot... he's got a better track record than Ryan Theriot. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he could be starting at 2B for us next year. So, does he belong in the Futures Game? Why not? bighurt4life
I'm excited about the both of them. Congrats to them
JPN366
In 2006, Getz was "Chris Clutch." Not much of a stumble in my opinion. Barons manager Carlos Subero was named to the coaching staff of the international team for the Futures Game. Chisoxfn
I'm not knocking Getz, I've probably been higher than Getz than 99% of people on this board (and that has been the case since he was selected). I've long projected him as a guy who could at his upside be Mark Grudzelanek and I really stick to that evaluation. I don't know when he'll get a chance in Chicago but I figure worse case we'll at least get to see a sneak peak of him in September and he'll obviously get a shot in spring training next year (if he's still in the org) but I still believe he's behind Danny Richar on the depth chart (given Richar's better "skill-set" and upside). This of course is dependent on the Sox going with Ramirez at SS and trusting in Richar/Getz to take over second which may not actually be the case. DBAHO
Yeah long - term I don't see Getz being more than an "Ozuna" type of sparkplug off the bench. Hope he can prove me wrong though, but I rate Richar in front at this stage.
BearSox
I don't understand the Pablo - Getz comparison at all.
kane0730
What side does Getz hit from? Does he have any speed? Thanks.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (kane0730 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) What side does Getz hit from? Does he have any speed? Thanks. First, here is a reference for you to get simple info like that: www.milb.com. Type it in, then type "Getz" in the player search box. Getz hits lefthanded. He has enough speed to steal double digits in bases in a given minor league season, but also gets caught a fair amount. Hard to say with MiLB stats though, on SB's. A better gauge would be a scouting report, but I don't know his speed that well. He's not slow - let's start with that.

Description of Getz from mlb.com - Spring 2006: "Getz represents a new kind of player coming in via the draft, guys who can fill super-utility roles right off the bat. One of the best pure hitters in the 2005 draft, Getz spent most of last summer with Kannapolis, where he hit .304 and drew 35 walks vs. only 10 strikeouts. Mostly a second baseman at Michigan, Getz can also play short, third, even center field, where he can use his plus speed to be a Chone Figgins type. If he doesn't end up being an everyday player at one spot, he could be a guy who gets 450 ABs moving around the field. He's impressed his organization so much that they plan on jumping him all the way to Birmingham to start 2006."
joejoedairy
It seems to me like the Sox system is stacked at middle infield with Getz Richar Beckam and Alexei but I don't want them to get rid of Cabrera because I think he is a great player who does it all. That depth seems to make him expendable though unfortunately
winninguglyin83
I think Getz is a very valuable guy. can play a bunch of positions, including the outfield. And he will do it at bargain basement prices for the next three years. That's important. With the reasonable amount we'll be paying Ramirez and potentially Getz, that gives more payroll flexibility to replace Thome next season with either a new DH or a right fielder so Jermaine can DH or play 1b as Paulie moves to DH. guys who can hit close to .300, play multiple spots and get paid league minimum are valuable,. And who knows, he could win the 2B job. Any word on how good he is in the field?

He doesn't have the arm strength to be an everyday SS, but can play there if needed, same with third prolly, but best suited at second. Based on everything I have read, the guy is scrappy, grinder, ball player who you can use anywhere in the field because he is smart and knows how to play. IMO, he replaces one of Ozuna or Uribe next year, I really like the kid. Walks equal Ks and hits consistently around .300.
daa84
getz has very good command of the strike zone...i honestly think hes a great fit for a team like ours right now...we have other guys that will hit the ball out of the park, but getz should be able to command the strike zone fairly well and keep a decent average....i really think he can be a ryan theriot type player...though probably with a bit less speed, but more defensive versatility
Chisoxfn
He can also play a bit of the outfield. Just a really really solid player and I think he's one of those guys that will make his way through the minors unknown and than just all of a sudden appear and play well at the major league level (which will leave a lot of people going, who is this guy and where did he come from). YASNY
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) He can also play a bit of the outfield. Though I haven't seen Getz play yet, I have kept an eye on his progress and I believe he'd be more of an asset with the big club right now than Ozuna is. I appreciate what Ozuna has done for the club but I think his time has passed.
BaseballNick
I just found out that a friend of mine will be the home plate umpire for this game. Edited July 10, 2008 by BaseballNick
