Of course you TRY to win that third game, but you don't see it as a "must-win" or anything ridiculous like people are suggesting in this thread.

People here need to stop worrying about the Cubs. They're not a division rival, and they're not even in the same f'n league.

People here are not worried about the Cubs. They may hate the Cubs but are not worried about them. We are worried about the Tigers and Twins who have made up 6 and 5 games, respectively, over the last 2+ weeks. Hence, we need to win as many games as possible.

Naw,I have been worried about the Cubs because I have to hear Cubs fans mouths everyday. They have forced me to make more of this series than it is.

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't recall multiple people here saying that we HAD to sweep the Giants, the Dodgers, the Pirates, or any other not-terribly-relevant NL team.

That's fine with me, but if Ozzie decides that AJ, Quentin, Linebrink, or another key player needs a day off, I'm not going to complain. This is a marathon, not a sprint against an irrelevant rival across town.

Yes, because a bunch of Cubs fans whose team hasn't won a championship in 100 years are going to illogically give you grief if the Sox only take 1/2 series and 2/6 overall against them this year. One would think that the Sox winning the WS three years ago would've upped the ante somewhat, but apparently a large number of Cubs fans are still stuck in 1999 and believe that the results of two interleague series mean something important.

I grew up in Park Forest and lived in the south 'burbs for 11 years, eastern Iowa for 4 years, and northern Indiana for 7 years. I understand the rivalry quite a bit more than you seem to think.

Some people take it harder than others. Its no big deal, nobody is right or wrong. The very same Cub fans that were dancing and cheering last weekend are now calling for Derrek Lee to be removed from the 3-spot permanently and want Eric Patterson, who annihilated Sox pitching last weekend, off the team.

Its easy to say "yeah, these are games against teams we will never play again, its irrelevant". But at the same time you look at the Sox pitiful record vs the NL last year and you can make a case that the team would have been a little bit more competitive down the stretch if they had held their own like they usually did.

Meh, the Sox had so many problems last year that even a winning record against the NL wouldn't have helped them.

But agreed that it's certainly nice that they've been a lot better in interleague play this year. They've had a lot of "cookie" games against the Pirates, Giants, and Dodgers and have done a great job of taking advantage of the relatively weak competition (the Rockies notwithstanding). That's going to help them tremendously over the long term. Even if they lose tonight, they'll still have won 4 out of the past 6 and taken a series against the best team in the NL.

went in to work last night and took off my jersey and put it upstairs where we keep our s***. after my shift i went up and a cubs fan i work with had made the jersey "hang itself" with a cord wrapped around it from the ceiling with a note saying "sox suck!"

i'd love to sweep them.

I had a bet with a cubs fan regarding the series. 2 rules, no cubicle pranks or heckling until the series was over. The Cubs fan couldnt even wait until the first game at Wrigley was over before he stapled a Cubs logo to my hat, wrote "Sox Stink, Sox Lose" on paper tiled on my desk, and emails waiting for me.

Needless to say I busted him out on hedging his bet with me, and hopefully I have a good reason to give him crap tomorrow.

BTW, winning two games does not atone for losing four.

I'd agree with that sort of. It would be disappointing to not make it 3-3.

But after last weekend, winning the first two was very nice. It showed some balls from our guys.

The Cubs could easily have stormed into the Cell and picked up where they left off.

It's not good to make a habit of losing season series to the Cubs, however. Let's face it. It is a big game for a lot of people for bragging rights and there's nothing wrong with that.

The Sox need to take care of their fans tonight and get us the 3-3 season split.

But we did win this series no matter what.

So apparently the problems aren't with Cubs fans, but morons who happens to be Cubs fans.

Apparently you've forgotten that the Sox won 2/3 in LA in between these two series. Or does that not count because there's no anger to be spewed at Dodgers fans?

The Sox lost a series last weekend, won a series earlier this week, and won a series this weekend. I'd say that the momentum has shifted and that the Sox are back on the right track.
