whitesoxbrian
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 29, 2008 -> 10:18 PM) Liles got re-signed, and Tampa traded a pick for the rights to Rolston, so scratch two UFA targets off the board. Was just about to post this. At least now maybe we can get Redden for 5 and Hossa for 8.5. Edited June 30, 2008 by whitesoxbrian
Metz
Per TSN Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone, who would have drawn considerable interest from around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent, will earn between $7 and $8 million in each of the first two years of the deal. Tampa Bay traded a third-round draft pick in 2009 to the Penguins in exchange for the exclusive negotiating rights to forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts on Saturday. On Sunday, the Lightning and Malone's camp got a deal done. Adding some intrigue to the story, last week the Lightning hired former Penguins' player Greg Malone as their head pro scout. Greg Malone is the father of Ryan. Malone, a 6-foot-4, 224-pound Pittsburgh native, played in 77 games with the Penguins last season and recorded 27 goals with 51 points. He also appeared in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2008 and tied for eighth in league scoring with six goals and 16 points as he helped Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup Finals. Malone set career highs for goals, assists, points, power-play goals (11) and game-winning goals (6) in 2007-08. He led the team in game-winning goals, ranked fourth in goals and third in power-play goals, while also ranking fourth among Penguin forwards in average ice time with 19:04. The 27-year-old has played in 299 career NHL games, all with the Penguins, and amassed 87 goals, 169 points, 27 power-play goals, 11 shorthanded goals and 11 game-winning goals. Malone scored at least 20 goals in three of four NHL seasons. Wow. That is a loaded front of the contract, but after the first two yours you have 5 years left at a bit over 3 mil. Still with getting Rolston he will ask for a pretty penny. The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Jarret Stoll and defenceman Matt Greene. The Oilers believe that with Sheldon Souray, Visnovsky helps solidify their powerplay. And with the development of Andrew Cogliano, Sam Gagner and Robert Nilsson, Edmonton had too many forwards. Plus, Stoll is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next year while Green will be a unrestricted free agents in two years. ''It's never easy to give up a player of Lubo's caliber, but for the direction of this franchise, this exchange allows us to add two players who fit the long-term vision for this team,'' Kings President and General Manager Dean Lombardi said. ''We appreciate Lubo's service and outstanding play these last seven years in Los Angeles. He was not only a great player for us, but a class act.'' With the trade, Edmonton inherits the five-year, US$28-million contract extension Visnovsky signed with the Kings in July 2007. The Kings will owe Greene $1.25 million for 2008-09 season. Visnovsky, 31, posted 70 goals and 209 assists in 499 games with the Kings since being drafted by Los Angeles in the fourth round, 118th overall, in 2000. He became the first Kings defenceman to lead the team in scoring in 2005-06, tallying a career-high 17 goals and 50 assists. The 5-10, 188 lbs. native of Topolcany, Slovak Republic, also added on assist in 12 career post season games. Stoll, 25, tallied 59 goals and 106 assists in 186 games since being selected by the Oilers with Edmonton's second round pick, 36th overall, in 2002. The 6-1, 210 lbs. native of Melville, SK, Canada, also has added four goals and six assists in 24 post-season games with Edmonton. Stoll was an assistant captain for the club in 2007-08. Greene, 24, has one goal and 12 assists in 151 games since being selected by Edmonton in the 2nd round, 44th overall, in 2002. The 6-3, 233 lbs. native of Grand Ledge, Mich., has added one assist in 18 playoff games with the Oilers.
IlliniKrush
f***, really wanted to see if we could snatch Rolston. That's the guy I really wanted. No guarantee anything gets done though, so we'll see. Looks like we could get Huselius as the big name forward if he's gone though. Steve9347
Malone is decent, but there's much bigger fish to fry in this FA market that a $30 mill, front loaded contract would not have made sense. The Hawks need to land Hossa and one of the big D-men.
DBAHO
Tampa's really going for it, loading up around Vinny. They'll have some very nice top 6 forwards next season, especially if they can sign Rolston. EvilJester99
IIRC the FA time doesn't start until noon on the 1st for whatever reason. Of course there could be trading of players rights and signings though. Edited June 30, 2008 by EvilJester99
whitesoxbrian
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) Should we expect some deals in the middle of the night tonight? I'm going to be up until 2 following signings and rumors on tsn.ca. I really hope we offer Campbell and Hossa 6-45 and 6-50, respectively, right away. This way, if both reject, that would give us more time to look at guys like Redden, Huslieus (sp?), etc.
EvilJester99
Ek on his Twitter page said someone is going to offer Hossa $9 mil. Of course its EK so TIFWIW. Edited June 30, 2008 by EvilJester99
whitesoxbrian
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) Ek on his Twitter page said someone is going to offer Hossa $9 mil. Of course its EK so TIFWIW. That's a boat load of cash, if it's true. I wouldn't mind this offseason: Streit 4-18 Huselius 5-26 But then again, DT, I believe, is determined to bring in a big name UFA at whatever the cost. I think he wants Hossa and/or Campbell, so an offseason like this: Campbell 6-45 Huselius 5-26 or this: Hossa 6-50 Streit 4-18 is not out of the question. EvilJester99
Out of those who remain I would rather have Hossa and Redden. I think Redden is still better defensively than Campbell...even though I would have no problem with getting Hossa and Campbell.

I think Redden is still better defensively than Campbell...even though I would have no problem with getting Hossa and Campbell. Rumors back during the year said Redden tore apart that Sens locker room with excessive cocaine use. I definitley don't want that. Now, if he takes a test showing no cocaine, then he can be ours- that would be fine, too. Streit would just be cheaper with the same defensive mind-set as Redden plus more offense. EvilJester99
Wow didn't know about Redden with the coke....hmmm well if thats true then I would rather they go with someone else.
DBAHO
I think Redden is definitely a better defensive defenseman than Streit, but offensively they're pretty similar. San Jose will probably target Redden after they lose Campbell most likely anyways. I'd still rather taregt Bouwmeester.
EvilJester99
Agreed DB... if DT can swing a deal for Bouwmeester and sign him long term. That would probably be the best deal on D. Here is something I seen on rototimes.com given its a few days old though. June 25, 2008 The Florida Panthers extended a qualifying offer to offensive defensemen Jay Bouwmeester on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Our View:The Panthers will do whatever it takes to keep their rising blueline star with the club, this after scoring a career best 15 goals last season. He is the young star they can least afford to lose on the blueline, so it's only a matter of how much he will get paid. EvilJester99
Wow just looking at Streit's stats... man he had 62 points on the Habs. Offensively he would be a huge upgrade. I haven't seen him play much so I don't know how he is defensively but he was a -6 but so much goes into that. Offensively he would be a huge upgrade. I haven't seen him play much so I don't know how he is defensively but he was a -6 but so much goes into that. He'd be an awful lot like Bryan Berard but with two eyes. Sure, he can put the puck in the net, but he's more than just a defensive liability. (hence the - +/- every year, even on last year's great squad.) Pass.
whitesoxbrian
Damn, I forgot Brooks Orpik is a FA. He'd probably cost around 4-4.5 a year- I wouldn't mind him at all.
whitesoxbrian
TB on a roll... TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Janne Niskala (YAH-nee NIHS-kah-lah) from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a sixth-round choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, it was announced by owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie. However good or not-so-good this guy is, atleast the new management is now going after team need in D.

IlliniKrush
You either overpay and then maybe you get one of Campbell/Hossa, or you try to get them for perceived market value and get neither. So you don't really win either way.
EvilJester99
I'd rather overpay for Hossa because there are other Dmen out there so they could live without Campbell. How many forwards of Hossa's caliber are out there now?
IlliniKrush
I'd rather not pay 9 mil for Hossa and have that cap hit for that many years. That would be by far worse than not signing him.

The Critic
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 07:41 PM) With the way the cap is headed, 9 million might not be as big of a hit as it looks right now. Still a major number, but maybe not crippling in three-four years. Either way, what the f*** was the lockout for? Fiscal Resp.... Fiscal Respons..... Hell, I can't even type it without laughing! ...until I remember that they f***ed the fans out of a complete season, then I stop laughing immediately.
