Caps Sign Theodore; Huet to Chicago? (Updated)

In a surprising move, the Caps have signed free agent goaltender Jose Theodore to a two-year contract. The team had been discussing a three-year contract extension with Cristobal Huet, but the sides couldn't close the deal this afternoon.

"It just fell apart," Huet's agent, Stephen Bartlett, told Ken Campbell of The Hockey News. "We just hit a couple snags that we couldn't work through."

Update: The deal with Theodore is for $9 million ($4.5 each season). That's obviously less cash and a shorter term than the three-year, $15 million the Caps had been discussing with Huet.

Update:I just heard from a source that Huet asked the Caps for three years, $15 million and the Caps offered it to him. But Huet then said he wanted test the market today and see what might be out there. Now it's looking like he'll sign a four year deal with Chicago for $5.6 million

Goodbye Khabby then if the above does happen.

My guess is he's off to Tampa. Kolzig isn't a starting caliber NHL goaltender anymore. But they do have Mike Smith there also, but I don't know if he's a bonafide #1.

Maybe Edmonton could be the team that trades for Khabby, they've been clearing salary today, and need an upgrade in goal from Roloson, so there are some definite possibilites.

Oh and the Senators, definitely.

Hmm...I wonder what we could get for Bulin...

Stuy was just saying the Huet thing looks to be a done deal. BREAKING NEWS: Cory Stillman agrees to terms with Florida on a three year deal for $10.6 million. Cristobal Huet has signed with Chicago. Details to follow.

I like the move.

I'm a fan of Huet, even though some people think he's a system goalie. I think he puts that theory to rest a little with his play in Washington.

So I think he's an upgrade on Khabibulin, who at his best was great, but just wasn't consistent enough, and too injury prone over the length of the deal.

DT could really get himself a nice forward or defenseman here by dangling Khabi.

If we could trade him to a team in need of a goalie like the Sens, we can get a solid player and a pick in return. A move like that would clear cap space and would allow us to then get the money back we just spent on Huet. :headbang

Yeah that's why it's smart on our part, if we can deal Khabi.

Depends on what we get back though. A top tier defenseman should be the priority. I wouldn't have minded Vishnosky (know I spelt that wrong), before he was dealt to Edmonton (even though he had a down year).

Too bad Florida have Vokoun, because I'd love to dangle Khabi + pieces for Bouwmeester.

So can someone fill me in on Huet? His numbers looks really good, but the name doesn't resonate. Also, what kind of return could we expect for Khabby?

Canadiens goalie, did pretty well, dealt to Washington to make room for Price.

The more-informed hockey geeks will go into more detail.

I like the move.

Here is a little more...

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed goaltender Cristobal Huet to a contract.

Huet, 32, finished with a 32-14-6 record and 2.32 goals-against average this season with a .920 save percentage between Washington and Montreal.

The Canadiens dealt Huet to the Capitals in February, electing to go with Carey Price as their starting goaltender. Huet was in the final year of a two-year contract and became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Huet has played 183 career games in the NHL. He posted a 83-61-24 record, a 2.43 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.

He posted an 11-2 record in 13 career games with the Capitals, with a 1.63 goals against average and a .936 save percentage.

He was 10th in GAA and 6th in save%.

He is 32, from France, and played very well down the stretch last year for the Caps. The deal is for 4 years and $5.6 per.

We could expect a solid player and a 3rd or 4th round pick for him.

Huet is a solid, very underated goalie. He has more of a stand-up style. Very good up high but has had some problems on shots down low. The HAwks could get a pick and a solid player for Khabby if they eat some of his contract because nobody wants to pay him 7 mil.

One would have to think DT already has a deal in place to ship off Habby right?

I hope so, cuz his bargaining position just weakened.

Other GMs know they have to deal that contract, so the Hawks may not get as much as they would if Tallon could say "Look, we're dealing our #1 guy here".
