In contrast, McCain will be positioned as a bold leader on economic matters, someone who has a "record of taking on corporate interests" and will "fight speculation driving up prices of oil and food" as well as "the lawsuit culture."

Bravo on the last point.

I basically agree with you, but I do not have a good solution nor have I ever heard one. We have so many law suits because we have so many rights and protections. We have a system where if a company ignores a problem, they get hit, and hit hard. We have a system where if you give shoddy treatment, you get sued. There certainly are abuses, but they come in the suits that are brought and lost, but even then restricting people's right to be heard in court is a precious right we really should not curtail.

McCain: Sorry I Went Negative... It Was Obama's Fault

The first question I asked John McCain and then Barack Obama was: How do you feel about the tone and direction of the campaign so far?

No surprise. Both men pronounced themselves thoroughly frustrated by the personal bitterness and negativism they have seen in the two months since they learned they would be running against each other.

"I'm very sorry about it," McCain said in a Saturday interview at his Arlington headquarters. "I think we could have avoided at least some of this if we had agreed to do the town hall meetings" together, as he had suggested, during the summer months.

Buzz is starting the hit out here in Denver. Lightpole banners for the convention started to go up and more speakers are being announced (Bill Clinton). Man its gonna be a crazy week out here, and I am basically in the middle of it all. I live a half block from the state capitol and about a block down from that is the designated "protest" area. Supposedly they are going to close a section of Colfax ave (longest street in the US) during certain times of the day for all the protestors to congregate. They also just announced the ticket procedures for Obama's speech at Invesco field. Looks like its gonna be a s***show to obtain them but living in Colorado you can sign up for a "community credential" and hope that you can get one.

MoveOn.org Director: GOP Donors... Watch Your Back

Nearly 10,000 of the biggest donors to Republican candidates and causes across the country will probably receive a foreboding “warning” letter in the mail next week.

The letter is an opening shot across the bow from an unusual new outside political group on the left that is poised to engage in hardball tactics to prevent similar groups on the right from getting off the ground this fall.

Led by Tom Matzzie, a liberal political operative who has been involved with some prominent left-wing efforts in recent years, the newly formed nonprofit group, Accountable America, is planning to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions.

We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground,” said Mr. Matzzie, who described his effort as “going for the jugular.”

The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.

The group is also hoping to be able to respond if an outside conservative group broadcasts a television advertisement attacking Senator Barack Obama, or another Democratic candidate, by running commercials exposing the donors behind the advertisements.

Judd Legum, who was the research director for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign, has signed on to play the same role for Accountable America.

The group has raised only $200,000, but Mr. Matzzie said he expected to collect more than $500,000 by next week, with an ultimate goal of $2 million.

Facts get in the way of lame attack ads:

McCain claims in an ad released today that "Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000. He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family."

But when it comes to promises, it's worth pointing out that, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center's analysis of both candidates' proposed plans, Obama would cut taxes for those making in the range of $38,000 to $66,000 three to almost eight times more than McCain would.

Under Obama's plan, according to the center, by 2009, those making $37,595 would see an average increase in their income of 3.6%, or a tax cut of $892; those making an average of $66,354 would see an increase in their income of 2.4%, or a tax cut of $1,042.

On the other hand, Under McCain's plan, those making $37,595 would see an increase in their income of only about 0.5%, or $113 tax cut; those making $66,354 would see only an increase of 0.7% in their income, or a tax break of $319.

From the new McCain ad:

"He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family."

Isnt Obama the one saying that seniors should no longer be taxed if they are making less than $50,000? Wouldn't that be LESS taxes on seniors?

My word that would be rough on the budget.

McCain Gets His Hamdan Facts Wrong, Falsely Claims He Was Found Guilty Of ‘Supplying Weapons’ In Afghanistan

On Wednesday, a military jury at Guantanamo Bay found Osama bin Laden’s former driver, Salim Hamdan, guilty of material support for terrorism in the first “contested” U.S. military war crimes trial since World War II. Hamdan was acquitted of other charges against him, including conspiracy to commit terrorist attacks.

Responding to the decision, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) released a statement welcoming the guilty verdict:

But McCain has his facts wrong when he claims Hamdan was found guilty of “supplying weapons to al Qaeda and Taliban forces in Afghanistan.” Though Hamdan was in possession of two shoulder-launched missiles when he was captured in Afghanistan, “the jury found him innocent of carrying the missiles as part of a conspiracy to kill U.S. soldiers.” The AP writes:

The weird thing is, is that they weren't even "for sale"....Colorado residents who signed up to recieve an email about the ticket information were informed on Wednesday. The email told us that we had to goto this website and sign up for a "Community Credential" and that we would be contacted by the 15th. We were only allowed to put ourselves in and another guest colorado resident. No one that I know including myself have herd anything yet. They are supposed to email/text message information to tell us if we received our "community credential." I got the email and I immediatly noticed b/c I have my gmail open here at work. I went to the website right away and signed up for a ticket. I will keep you guys posted as I hear more. Hopefully I will get one I only signed up for 1 ticket.

Well if I fail then I am def renting out my apartment. My buddies a block away from me with a 2 bedroom got $4000 for 5 nights....
