QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 5, 2010 -> 07:07 PM)
I have degrees in statistics and in history, i'm very aware of why it is necessary to back up claims with eveidence. I was just amazed that someone who is seemingly as informed as you appear to be has never once read an article or seen a news story where they talked about a crime related to terrorism carrying something other than a life sentence. It seemed as if you were being difficult for the sake of being difficult by making me "prove it".

You're right, they can, and often will. But the only point I was trying to make was that it was very conceivable that someone could be convicted of an attempted terrorist attack or with aiding in one or whatever, and then one day being eligible for release. That all stems from your initial statement of what would it matter if they were in prison the rest of their life. I was only trying to illustrate that that may not always be the case.

It's because context matters.

It's always the most outspoken:

Anti-Gay Leader Caught With Male Prostitute

When George Alan Rekers, a cofounder along with James Dobson of the Family Research Council and a leader in the ex-gay movement, was caught walking off a plane from Europe with a young male prostitute, he first insisted that he didn't know the young man was an escort until halfway through their 10-day vacation.

"I had surgery," Rekers told the Miami New Times, which broke the story yesterday, "and I can't lift luggage. That's why I hired him."

Rekers had hired the escort, dubbed "Lucien" by the New Times, through the website RentBoy.com (NSFW), a popular site that hosts ads for gay male escorts. There's little mistaking what the site is for.

The site's users first encounter a disclaimer that the may encounter "content and materials that are of a graphic and/or sexual nature," and must agree to terms and conditions before entering. The homepage is predominantly photos of naked men. To search for an escort, or "find boys," one can even select a specialty: "rentboy," "sugardaddy" or "masseur."

"I do not believe that there is any way a person could be mistaken about what they are hiring when they find a listing on our website," a spokesman for RentBoy tells TPM in an email. "I think it is clear from our ad campaigns in gay publications and our website itself that we are targeting a gay audience -- gay men seeking men for hire."

We have today been presented with an explanation about why so few Republicans are willing to work on anything productive. When you understand issues, you wind up supporting those Democrats!

"I think (Senator Bob Corker)’s a guy who’s willing to get down into the weeds," said South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who is No. 4 in GOP leadership. "Because he immerses himself in that and understands it so well — the positions he adopts may not always be the ones that everyone else in our conference comes to."
Sounds about right to me.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ May 5, 2010 -> 11:08 AM)
when does Joe say you should take away his citizenship rights, before or after he's found guilty of a crime?

According to the bill he's introducing tomorrow, all it takes is a declaration from the state department.

Two things you should know about this: First, it isn't just some paranoid liberal nightmare. It's actually moving forward. Lieberman is going to hold a presser tomorrow to introduce the bill, I'm told, along with Rep. Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has already signaled he could support this.

Second, Lieberman's office has clarified to me how the law would work: It would empower the State Department to conclude -- on its own -- that Americans are conspiring with terror groups and should be stripped of their citizenship.

Lieberman's law would amend an earlier statute that details other things that can cost you citizenship: Serving in the army of a foreign state, pledging allegiance to a foreign state, and so on. In those cases the State Department decides whether your disloyalty merits loss of citizen status. Lieberman's law would add involvement with a foreign terror organization -- as opposed to a foreign state -- to this list.

...

Who would determine whether you're involved with a foreign terror group? The State Department. It already decides what is and isn't designated as a terror organization. Lieberman's law would also empower State to determine whether you are in league with one of these groups.

Here's where it gets more complicated. You would still have the right to contest this in court. And if you did, the burden of proof would be on State -- not on you -- to persuade the court that your involvement with a terror organization is sufficient to justify taking away your citizen status.

Bottom line: Lieberman's law can't keep you out of court against your will if you want to contest efforts to strip your citizenship. And chances are that if you were already facing other charges -- plotting or executing a terrorist act -- you would be simultaneously tried for that in civilian court, too, even as State continued to try to revoke your citizen status.

Lieberman is introducing this tomorrow. So at a minimum there could be a national debate about it. My bet is more Dems than you might think will be afraid to oppose this.

What do you do with an American citizen whom you strip of citizenship after terrorism charges? Do you expect Pakistan to want him back?

What about a terrorist that's a US citizen and looks like this?

Jihad-Jane-Not-guilty-to-terror-charges.

Do you just send the dark skinned ones away with funny names?

You can't just arbitrarily take away someone's citizenship, and if you have enough proof to even do something like that, then why are we talking about it? Convict him in court, sentence him, call it a day. It's not like we're going to not have them in a U.S. prison when we do and it's not like it's going to matter whether what their nationality is.

I wouldn't say Lieberman's statement is insane, but I would definitely say he's just talking out of his ass because he thinks it sounds good to some people. Again.

Thursday, April 30: Cantor announces a Republican listening tour, saying the GOP needs to “begin a conversation with the American people.”

Saturday, May 2: Cantor says Republicans must “get back to listening to the people.”

Monday, May 4: Rush Limbaugh smacks down Cantor’s project, saying “we do not need a listening tour.”

Wednesday, May 6: Cantor caves, saying “really, this is not a listening tour.”

Yeah, the President only has so much impact on job numbers. Still, after a legitimately positive month...this graph looks even better.

Which shows that March was also revised up above 200k job growth.

Sen. John McCain...now less sane than Glenn Beck.

Finally got around to watching that video.

Beck did a good job demonstrating how stupid the F&F people are and how s***ty their arguments are there.

edit: and as the interview went on, the F&F people demonstrated their complete lack of knowledge of the issues they were (attempting) to discuss. they sound like a bunch of dumb teenagers thinking they're political and legal experts.
