Rex Kickass
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 18, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) More Sharon Angle. When Reid is re-elected easily in November, the Dems should thank the Tea Party. This candidate they put up there is drowning, she's apparently incapable of a coherent thought. Rand Paul is going to make Kentucky competitive for the Democrats. Sharron Angle is going to save Reid's career. And Mark Kirk is going to lie himself out of Obama's senate seat. What looked great for the Republicans six months ago might be having them reach for the Pepto in a couple months.

HuskyCaucasian
wow and for clarification: Overseas Contingency Operation is a Pentagon term of art used largely for budgetary purposes. What looked great for the Republicans six months ago might be having them reach for the Pepto in a couple months. After my amazing Bill Halter predictions, I will continue with predictions about the races you mentioned. KY- Rand Paul will win; blowout. NV- Tough one here. Both candidates are pretty bad. I predict Reid loses, as I think unemployment is actually going to increase and the economy will worsen by Nov. Harry Reid's only chance is a complete meltdown by Angle (which could definitely happen). Out of the 3 races mentioned in this post, this is the prediction I am least confident in. IL- Another tough one. Giannoulias is just such an incredibly bad candidate, I think he losses. He's a Blago Jr.
Balta1701
Since they began making follow-up house calls in early May, census takers have encountered vitriol, menace and flashes of violence. They have been shot at with pellet guns and hit by baseball bats. They have been confronted with pickaxes, crossbows and hammers. They've had lawn mowers pushed menacingly toward them and patio tables thrown their way. They have been nibbled by ducks, bitten by pit bulls and chased by packs of snarling dogs. Some days, being cursed at seems part of the job description. So far, the Census Bureau has tallied 379 incidents involving assaults or threats on the nation's 635,000 census workers, more than double the 181 recorded during the 2000 census. Weapons were used or threatened in a third of the cases. Now, with just three weeks to go in the door-knocking phase of the count, the number of census takers has dwindled, and the remaining households are the toughest. While most homeowners have received census takers graciously, some say they have been surprised at the degree of anger exhibited by Americans who consider them the embodiment of intrusive government. "I came across loads of hostility," said Douglas McDonald, who summoned police in Deltona, Fla., after a tug-of-war with an irate homeowner over a census form. The homeowner threw his ripped half in the toilet. Damn intrusive constitution.

Balta1701
Well, at least sometimes they admit what they think the real problem is...businesses are scared of subpoenas if they break the law. At a recent speech to Pennsylvania Republicans here, he boasted about what would happen if the GOP wins 39 seats, and he gets the power to subpoena. “That will make all the difference in the world,” he told 400 applauding party members during a dinner at the chocolate-themed Hershey Lodge. “I won’t use it to have corporate America live in fear that we’re going to subpoena everything. I will use it to get the very information that today the White House is either shredding or not producing.”

lostfan
It's nice when someone else besides me "gets it." Since it's a guy's blog I'm just gonna paste the whole thing here. I don't necessarily endorse everything he's saying (I'm not pro-gun control for example), but the general thrust of his article is that people are full of s*** and delusional about certain things. http://open.salon.com/blog/robert_kelley/2..._to_some_things Time To Face Up To A Few Things Every election, the candidates tell us what we want to hear, regardless of whether it bears any resemblance to reality. The voters eat it right up, selling their votes to the candidate with the best promises. It’s all a charade, the candidates know they don’t mean what they say and most of the people know that as well. So here’s the truth: The national debt will never be repaid. The only way to pay off the debt is to consistently run budget surpluses for a generation or more. That ain’t gonna happen. If a surplus appears for a year or two, someone’s going to run for president on the grounds that this surplus belongs to us and that we better take it now. The idea that our children/grandchildren will pay off the debt is absurd, they’ll kick the can down the road just like we did. The budget will rarely, if ever, be balanced. Just because it isn’t logically possible for politicians to promise lower taxes along with entitlements and a military empire doesn’t mean that they won’t make those promises. Energy independence is impossible for this generation, if ever. The US has 5% of the world’s population and consumes about 25% of the world’s power. It uses about 6.6 billion barrels per year and only has about 21 billion barrels of reserves. Do the math. Independence is theoretical possible- for about 3 years. The notion that “drill, baby, drill” is anything more than a bumper sticker for halfwits is laughable. Green energy, windmills, solar, nuclear, and hydro are all great but we’re fooling ourselves if we believe we can totally wean ourselves from the teat of oil. Raising state personal income tax rates does not drive business away. Businesses choose location on a variety of factors and pay their accountants good money to maximize their revenues. The local individual tax rates simply don’t get into the equation as these taxes are paid by the employees, not the corporation. All the corporation has to do is reprogram the payroll computer to account for any tax increases. It is possible for tax rates to be too low. Taxes are as low as they have been in many years. It is very possible that the rate is too low, given the inability of the government to identify a means to balance the budget. We will never get to Mars. Sure, it would be great for science to explore the solar system. But there is actually little that astronauts can do that instruments can’t do better and infinitely cheaper. A manned Mars mission might be feasible if humans did not continually quench their thirst for war. Unfortunately, that will never be the case. Guns are not going to be confiscated. This one hurts for me, personally. I would love to see more gun control. But it isn’t going to happen anytime soon. The Supreme Court declared (and I think incorrectly, like 4 of the 9 justices) that there is an individual right to own firearms. I think in 200 years, this will seem quaint and outdated. Until then, we need to accept this. Abortions are not going to be outlawed. Like I have to accept gun ownership, the right needs to accept that abortion is legal. Roe is not going to be overturned anytime soon. Gay rights are coming. The younger generation cannot fathom why we even debate the issue. The public is becoming more accepting of gay people and the trend is both accelerating and irreversible. In 20 years it will be unthinkable that we ever discriminated against gays. Democracy doesn’t work everywhere. We assume that every nation should have a democratic government and have been willing to go to war so that they may be established. It doesn’t work. In too many places the military runs the show, always has, and always will. The days of good blue collar jobs are over. It used to be that you could get out of high school, walk over to the the factory across the street, and sign up for a job that would give you good pay, full benefits, and allow you to retire on a nice pension. Those days are gone. In our never-ending race to the bottom, employee benefits are being jettisoned like ballast. Defined benefit pensions are disappearing. The factory itself may last long enough to retire from. Global warming is real. The anti-global warming lobby is well-funded and takes good advantage of the suspicious and paranoid, anti-government nature of the less educated public. But there is simply no lack of scientific consensus. The science is solid. The data was not falsified, “climategate” did not disprove global warming in any way. Not every problem can be solved. It’s quite possible that the oil leak will continue until the well runs dry. It’s possible that we cannot reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere to stop global warming. It’s very possible that there will never be a stable government in Afghanistan or Somalia. As W.C. Fields said, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then give up. No use being a damn fool about it.” Bipartisanship is dead. Republicans have given up on any pretense of adult responsibility. They’re doubling down on the failure of the US. They would much rather prevent the captain from steering the ship away from the reef than let him take credit for not sinking the ship. So there you have it. If we could just stop trying to do the impossible, we might just be able to do the possible. We may not be able to balance the budget, but we can take action (raise taxes) to help. We may not be able to stop global warming, but perhaps we can slow it down. We may not be able to listen to each other, but we can stop shouting. Gallup had one poll about 6 months ago that showed what you suggest, it got large amounts of press, then their next poll showed things back to just about where they've sat for the last 15 years or so, and it got no press. Almost as if there was some statistical phenomenon going on where if you poll on an issue 100+ times over 20 years, you'll occasionally get polls that show odd trends. Balta1701
The ability of the human mind to compartmentalize seemingly contradictory ideas has always amazed me. The Raytown farmer who posted a sign on a semi-truck trailer accusing Democrats of being the “Party of Parasites” received more than $1 million in federal crop subsidies since 1995. But David Jungerman says the payouts don’t contradict the sign he put up in a corn field in Bates County along U.S. 71 Highway. “That’s just my money coming back to me,” Jungerman, 72, said Monday. “I pay a lot in taxes. I’m not a parasite.
