mr_genius
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2012 -> 09:39 PM) Which is why everyone asks for the birth certificate of the guy who was born in the Panama Canal zone. Or had a father born in Mexico. Those guys never got past those questions. Has nothing to do with assuming that a black guy must be illegitimate. The GOP demanded to see Romney's birth certificate. He will show it to anyone. anyways, now to the 'birther' issue. It all started with Obama's book that claimed he was born in Kenya. Someone saw it, told people, and now they are all convinced he was born in Kenya. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/born-k...66#.UDmOraN0ios Obama's former literary agency misidentified his birthplace as Kenya while trying to promote the then-Harvard Law grad as an author in 1991. According to a promotional booklet produced by the agency, Acton & Dystel, to showcase its roster of writers, Obama was "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." Then Obama played a very shrewd game; refusing to produce a birth certificate and let the conspiracy theories roll. all to bring it out at the height of the birther mania to make his detractors look like idiots. Now Romney tells jokes about the whole situation. So would I. Edited August 26, 2012 by mr_genius

You can claim that all you want (and hell, it may be true) -- but in this instance, you certainly sound like you're toeing a company line. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 26, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) No, Balta just gets his jollies by faux pissed offedness about racism and ®epublicans. Frankly, I think both him and senor genius have a point. I think it was an offhand joke by Romney that wasn't meant to offend or sound like the way Balta, Lostfan, or StrangeSox are reading it. That said, after the fact, it doesn't take any great leap of logic to get to their conclusion, either.
lostfan
When I originally saw Romney's comment the first thing I thought was "yeah, that's because white people don't have to always worry about proving they belong." The concept is totally unfamiliar to Romney (and frankly most white people) and he probably doesn't even get why it's not funny, so I really doubt he was actually making a racist comment. But seriously, that's what that means.

Soxbadger
Sweet sounds like Romney is going to be pro-immigration: "In the campaign to come, the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity need a clear and unapologetic defense, and I intend to make it because I have lived it," If you really are a free market capitalist, immigration should be issue #1, #2 and #3 as govt interference with labor is basically one of the worst forms of govt intrusion on the market. Oh he doesnt believe that, I forgot economic freedom doesnt include labor anymore. /puzzled

But I know Romney is for more immigration, but it is in the form of more guest workers. And yes, it could be argued that more guest workers are government interference with the supply and demand aspects of the labor market. On the other end of the spectrum is the view that anything but open boarders is government intrusion into the labor market.

Dont call yourself pro-capitalist or for economic freedom, unless you are for complete legal immigration. Romney is just as much a socialist as Obama, he just wants to interfere in other ways. Thats the point, when it comes to economics, you are choosing between socialist a or socialist b, which is why in my opinion this election isnt about economics at all, its about how much control should the govt have over American's daily life. And since Romney is more for govt intrusion in social life (restriction on abortion, restrictions on marriage) I cant vote for him. I just find it amusing that he believes economic freedom doesnt include labor, or he never read Adam Smith.

Rex Kickass
Mitt Romney holds a Tampa fundraiser on a Yacht. A Yacht which is apparently chartered in the Caymans. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/romney-party...ed#.UD5L89ZlQ7s The exclusive event, hosted by a Florida developer on his yacht "Cracker Bay," was one of a dozen exclusive events meant to nurture those who have raised more than $1 million for Romney's bid. "I think it's ironic they do this aboard a yacht that doesn't even pay its taxes," said a woman who lives aboard a much smaller boat moored at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina.
