I'm actually pretty happy these protests are going on. Now, some of the crowd of course will be whack-jobs, as with any protest of any kind. But the general idea that the government is spending too much money and trying to intrude where it shouldn't, I agree with.

Of course, there were protests just like this one, but protesting the Iraq War, back in 2003-ish. And they were bigger than this (I am seeing "thousands" as the description of this one, which is pretty vague) it appears. I agreed with that too.

My annoyance though, is with the bulk of people I see getting all upset about us spending $900B over 10 years on health care reform, and yet many of those same people had no issue with going into a fully unjustified and useless war that killed thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of others and cost MORE THAN THAT. All told, I think the damage done by overspending on health care is a hell of a lot less harmful than overspending to go to war for no good reason. Just my view.

In any case, I like protests. I like that people voice their opinions, even if I disagree with some of them. And I'd like to see the current Dem Congress try to get the message on this overspending (and yes, I think its a lot more on them than on Obama).

and donated a lot to Obama. You can say 'librul' all you want, but they are pro-Obama. which is fine, they can be pro-whatever they want as far as I'm concerned as long as they don't get special treatment from the White House

And if you read the article you linked, you'll see why they took down the ads.

Saturday, September 12th, a crowd estimated from 450,000 people to 1.2 million people marched on Washington to protest government tax and spending policies. The Tax Payers' March on Washington was the culmination of the tea party movement.

The 450,000 person figure was an estimate from Freedom Works, one of the sponsors of the protest march. The 1.2 million person figure is reportedly an estimate from the Capitol Police.

there's a lot of em. i would imagine the capital police would be pretty good at estimating this type of stuff. the pictures of the crowd i've seen are actually pretty impressive

LOL, hover over the "crowd estimated at" link in that article. It goes to, I kid you not, rightwingnuthouse.com.

Anyway, like I said, I'm happy its going on. Might be more or less, but probably similar in size, to the larger Iraq War protest crowds that were in the 100-200k range. And as it happens, I agree in principle with both groups.

google should block them, makes people think AP

Yeah, I have to admit, I thought that too at first, then clicked around and realized not.

Its kinda like those fliers you get in the mail, telling you that your car warranty is almost up and you should extend it - complete with font and icons that look JUST LIKE Ford or GM stuff.

Having been to Inauguration Day I can say that unless you're looking at a satellite image you really can't get 1-1.5 million people in one shot. DC was basically shut down for Inauguration Day. Was the Mall full?

If that is the case, the estimates for Taste of Chicago are about a factor of 10 too high, because that's about how many people get called a million for the fireworks.

That's a little different because we're talking some more open space around Grant Park and such. How many were there for Obama's acceptance speech? A couple hundred thousand wasn't it?

I also don't think the distance lengthwise is anywhere near as much as is shown there. We are talking about something like half a mile of length. That pic looked longer than that to me judging by the building sizes there.

There were a lot of flags yesterday into this morning flown at half staff.

Later in the day when people checked that flag was suddenly at full staff.

Anyway...a typical football stadium is what, 60-70,000? If you emptied all of a football stadium in to one street as a march, and then allowed people to spread out enough to hold signs, how would it look? Wouldn't that fill up a street?

Maybe they're off by some amount, maybe the march had 100,000 but it's probably not an order of magnitude. And anyway, 100,000 turned out for a rally that seems to have no specific motivation (we don't like Obama! doesn't count) isn't exactly shabby.

This is supposed to be a million people when it is full.

I think its great to see so many people politically motivated for what is hopefully the right reasons, even if I disagree with their positions. That is if I could figure out what those positions were. The dude from FreedomWorks who was one of the organizers of the event said 450K and I'd take that number at their word.
