French minister accuses U.S. of 'occupying ' Haiti

By Michael Krebs.

Characterizing the American troop deployment in Haiti as an 'occupying' force, France's minister in charge of humanitarian aid issued concern over U.S. air traffic controls.

With the situation on the ground deteriorating in Haiti and the challenges of looting and scarce food, water and medical supplies in confluence, a French minister has described the American troop presence in Haiti as an "occupying" force.

Alain Joyandet expressed frustration with the U.S. military, taking his concerns to the United Nations.

"This is about helping Haiti, not about occupying Haiti," Mr Joyandet said, according to a report in the Telegraph.

U.S. commanders have taken over Haiti's air traffic needs, directing evacuation flights and inbound humanitarian freight.

The United States is expected to deploy 10,000 troops to the troubled island nation. The death toll in Haiti is estimated at 200,000, and the country's infrastructure is effectively shattered.

Another debt ceiling increase

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100120/ap_on_...s_debt_limit_11

Senate Democrats on Wednesday proposed allowing the federal government to borrow an additional $1.9 trillion to pay its bills, a record increase that would permit the national debt to reach $14.3 trillion...

The record increase in the so-called debt limit is required because the budget deficit has spiraled out of control in the wake of a recession that cut tax revenues, the Wall Street bailout, and increased spending by the Democratic-controlled Congress. Last year's deficit hit a phenomenal $1.4 trillion, and the current year's deficit promises to be as high or higher.

Jeez, a woman scorn... oh wait, a country scorn... oh whatever, its just some idiot diplomat, probably a guy who got a political favor job and they stuck him somewhere they thought he'd stay out of trouble (Minister of Humanitarian Aid to Haiti?).

I heard multiple reports on NPR that the only people let into the airport in Haiti in the first days following the quake were people with American passports---even those with European passports had trouble leaving the country. Meanwhile, it's not clear that the Americans were invited to take over air traffic controlling duties (although perhaps they were right to assert themselves if the traffic was being mismanaged).

The port au prince airport handles anywhere from 6 - 12 jet flights daily on a normal non-earthquake day. It's currently handling about 200 flights in and out on a single runway. If we weren't there doing this, we'd have another catastrophe in Haiti to deal with.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has once again accused the United States of playing God. But this time it's Haiti's disastrous earthquake that he thinks the U.S. was behind. Spanish newspaper ABC quotes Chavez as saying that the U.S. navy launched a weapon capable of inducing a powerful earthquake off the shore of Haiti.

I just don't get it. You have the crazy right-wingers like Pat Robertson saying dumb stuff about this whole situation, and then you have just-as-crazy left-wingers accusing the US of sending in Marines for military/ imperialistic gains.

Why the hell would we want to destroy or invade Haiti? What resources are there to secure? Why do so many people lack functional brains?
