greg775
I just read the Sun Times and Oz said he likes Linebrink because he's on the plate and Dotel isn't. I trust Oz on this one. He's going to have to go with his gut on a nightly basis and see what happens.
Kyyle23
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) Some of you guys act like Dotel is really good. He might be worth a try, but he's no Rivera. Committee sounds good to me. In 2004 he had 36 saves with 122 strikeouts in 85 innings with only 68 hits allowed. Saying he is "No rivera" is kind of like saying "He isnt the best ever". Of course he isnt, nobody is. That doesnt mean he cannot be successful in a role that he was previously successful in. The only thing you have to worry about is his health
Rowand44
Liney definitely needs to be the 8th inning guy. I think he's proven he can't handle the 9th, that's not a knock on him but there's no point to keep trotting him out there when he's a great set up man. greg775
2004 is a long time ago. I'm not against oz trotting him out there if Oz thinks he is the man on a given night. I'm saying Oz in the paper said he has a reason for going with Linebrink over Dotel. Linebrink is on the plate; Dotel isn't, he said. DABearSoX
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 07:30 PM) Does it really matter what inning you come in to pitch? Does Linebrink crap the bed because he comes out of the bullpen knowing he is in the "closer" role or in a save situation? I doubt it, he is just having a tough stretch, all pitchers go through this. I really think it does matter....

Liney is done closing
greg775
Why do you say Liney is done closing when Oz told the Sun Times writer that Liney is his guy? I think you could see anybody close, even Thornton if Oz has the gut feeling that night.
Kyyle23
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) Why do you say Liney is done closing when Oz told the Sun Times writer that Liney is his guy? I think you could see anybody close, even Thornton if Oz has the gut feeling that night. Because a month ago Ozzie said Kenny was going to make changes to the roster by Tuesday. Ozzie says a lot of things, and does a lot of other things. Im pretty sure Ozzie can see, just like we can, that Liney is struggling in the closers role. But he isnt going to blast his set-up guy in the paper after he said he stinks.
chw42
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) Some of you guys act like Dotel is really good. He might be worth a try, but he's no Rivera. Committee sounds good to me. He's not that good, he's converted 82 saves out of 116 opportunities in his career. That's 71%. He even had 36 saves one year with Houston and Oakland, he also blew 8 saves though. Right now, Linebrink has converted 25% of his saves. So, would you like 71% or 25%? ----------
What's worse than a few potential blown saves is this might hurt liney's confidence.

Yea, him saying "I stink" yesterday didn't make me real happy. Maybe it's time for a nice talk with Coop.
greg775
Good point kyle. I forgot temporarily about Oz's fibbing tendencies. But I still don't know what you guys have against closer by committee. Would any of you mind on a given night Thornton taking the ninth if he breezes through the previous inning as he did last night? Or even Masset if he does the same? Committee baby. Dotel has 2 blown saves this year, and the Sox lost both. Linebrink has 3 blown saves this year, and the Sox won all 3. I will take the W over the save percentage. It doesn't matter because Carrasco is the Closer.
VAfan
I'd say after that performance, Dotel has settled the issue. 3 Ks in the 9th. 9 strikes, 1 ball. Nice job.

Princess Dye
All pitchers go thru bad stretches with relievers, it means consecutive days of badness, so it hurts more. but Brink has his right now and i'm sure we'll be cursing out Dotel again one day too. joejoedairy
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 10:42 AM) I was so pissed last night that I just wanted the Royals to walk us off after they tied the game. Chisoxfn
That was the best I've seen Dotel look in a Sox uni. His velocity was up (hitting 93-94 consistently) and that FB had great life to it.
