Josh Hamilton Presents the 2008 Home Run Derby

Are you seriously alleging that Josh Hamilton is on steroids or performance-enhancers? The same Josh Hamilton who is drug-tested ten times a month and has a coach/friend with him at almost all times? And are you alleging this without a willingness to back it up with something more forthcoming, or is it just an innuendo?

I would have to say I'm 50/50 on Hamilton. You know I'm his biggest fan, but I learned a long time ago that when people start hitting home runs longer than anyone else in history, something might be up.

Except for the fact that Josh has been a masher since he was a child and he's in the prime of his life, at the age at which all sluggers -- according to Bill Jenkinson, who charts homeruns hit by every major slugger in history and many, many "minor" sluggers -- hit their longest homeruns. He is at the right age to hit them as far, and he was quite clearly blessed with tremendous ability. That does not preclude the possibility of enhancement, but I doubt it.

I worry less about Hamilton than I do just about any other player in baseball. He's too closely monitored, and his whole story says otherwise. I think Pablo Ozuna is more likely to be a roider than Josh Hamilton.

HGH can't be tested for by MLB...

He managed to top that with his "this is a bad night to be an atheist" comment imo. What the hell are they paying this guy so much money for? He is awful.

Hamilton's performance was awesome. I was thinking about his situation when they were glorifying him and calling him a role model, though -- as a society, we seem to celebrate people who fall and pick themselves back up and reach great heights more than people who just perform from the get-go without the whole redemption storyline. Seems sort of odd to me.

People hate Giambi, a juicer who cleaned up and pretty much admitted what he did, yet Hamilton is a hero after nearly killing himself on something way more dangerous. I don't get it.

One is premeditated and aims to cheat fans, clubs and peers for personal gain. The other is an often tragic tale of addiction and loss that isn't cheating anyone but themselves. I see a massive difference between the two.

The fake mustaches in New York seem to suggest people are starting to get over Giambi.

Personal gain is what drug use is about 100%. Any they are cheating a lot more than themselves. Hamilton cheated his family, his friends, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to start with...

Jesse Rogers was just on with Mike Murphy (ugh) and insinuated that Josh Hamilton was using a corked bat during the Derby yesterday.

What a punk.....I don't think a chunk of cork is going to help that much in blasting out 28 HRs....

it probably would have shattered anyway with all the stress that was put on that bat....

You're right.

Jesus is

agreed

I also would have no problem with a corked bat...who the f*** cares, it's a goddamn home run derby. If anything, it should be a friggin requirement so that way I don't have to deal with players hitting 2 homers in a round...make it so you HAVE to hit 10 to advance to the 2nd round

Well everybody knows the baseballs in this are juiced anyways, but a corked bat adds what, 10 or 15 feet to a baseball (maybe?) So I'd guess what, two or three of his homers made it by that little, if that? I doubt his bat was corked, but even if it was, it had little affect on the proceedings.

His drug use wasn't to pad his numbers and gain a bigger contract. Giambi > Hamilton in terms of callous disregard for others.

Leave it to the f***ing beat reporter to suck the joy out of a picnic on a sunny day.

I realize that their jobs are based on having a story, but at what point do you prioritize your decency as a human over being a bottom feeding rat?

My favorite is when I'm listening to Boers and Bernstein or MJH, and Bruce Levine or Rogers will have important breaking news that's so far off the mark that you'll never hear it again.

For example: 3:05 Cubs on verge of trading Cedeno and prospects to M's for Bedard, deal is all but done.

3:35 Cedeno will take Theriot's place in the lineup for the next week because Ryan is suffering from a massive bout of fail. In other news Bedard signed a 14 year contract including a full no-trade clause today. Both the M's and Bedard have long shown interest in continuing their partnership, and the M's have laughed in the face of GM's interested in him, most notably Jim Hendry.

With Mike North gone, Jesse Rogers days are numbered. There is no way he can report this without evidence. It's borderline yellow journalism.
