Iowa A.D. Under Fire

God I hate Gary Barta

If there are serious suggestions that he tried to have the AD and football program cover up an alleged sexual assault, you might not have to worry about him for long.

I am an Iowa alum, and if the letter is accurate and Barta, Ferentz et al. lied to this girl, I hope all of them are looking for work. Protecting rapists to me should be a crime itself. I just hope she can somehow move on from this and overcome or at least be able to deal with all that comes with it. I also hope she sues the pants off the University and gets a settlement that sends a message. The Iactions of the Iowa officials with whom she dealt, if the letter is accurate, is beyond sickening.

It is. If there isn't a statute specific to rape then there is always conspiracy and aiding and abetting a criminal.

This has been something that has been going on for several years, and its really beyond ridiculous. Ferentz and his staff usually don't get the cream of the crop recruits. They get guys who are not as highly thought of and have been successful coaching them into good players. Apparently, a good portion of these recruits are total idiots. Something has to change. Either Ferentz tells his players that there is a good chance Iowa City police have an eye on you so don't do anything stupid, and the consequence of doing something stupid is the loss of your free education, or someone a little higher than Ferentz tells him, if your players embarrass the University anymore, you're going to pay the price. Maybe that will get him and his staff to pay a little more attention to the character aspect of a potential recruit. It doesn't appear the NFL is still trying to knock down his door after a couple of down seasons.

All I'm going to say is if true, anyone involved in the scandal should be fired, imo (well by that I mean anyone who tried to cover up something like rape). Absolutely dispicable. They didn't learn from the Steve Alford/Pierre Pierce s***.

Not quite as concerned with the drunk football player. There was the theft stuff that happened with what seemed to be half of there WR corps last year but for the most part the Iowa football players issues have been what I would deem "minor". This potential rape thing is a whole other story though.

Either way all I read this off-season was how Iowa was moving forward and putting more issues on character and they were going to do what they could to ensure it. Who knows if they have or haven't but I hope they aren't just saying things, rather DO IT.

Does the A.D take the fall, or does Ferentz go down with him?

I hate to say this, I think Ferentz is a good coach, but with all the arrests the team has had, and if Ferentz himself was helping to cover up this rape case, then I think he goes down as well. Maybe he should've taken that Green Bay job a couple of years ago when he had the chance.

There will be a shortage of moving vans in a few days.

But winning IS everything

But onw word before we pass judgement -- DUKE

There's a little more evidence here than they had at Duke. The alleged victim is a student/athlete herself, so here credibility is probably a little higher. This is a program that has had legal problem after legal problem. It needs to be cleaned up. At least put Ferentz on a short rope. If he or anyone else had anything to do with trying to cover up a rape, I hope they can and will be charged with something criminal, and they all lose their jobs. If he's just an innocent bystander, its time he take resposibility for all the jackasses he's bringing in to Iowa City. At least when other schools had a team of criminals they won, and I say that in jest. The arrests need to stop. There's no doubt in my mind Iowa City police are targeting footballl players and basketball players, so they will just have to get by with obeying the law. If they can't, there should be zero tolerance, and if the behavior continues, the zero tolerance needs to extend to the people responsible for bringing them to town.

It's definitely true. The two guys were considered "not in good standing" the weekend that it occurred. No one was quite sure what was going on but there were immediate rumors that the worst was happening.

As for the turning recruits into stars thing, pretty much every recruit that's come out of Iowa started as a 1-3 star. It hasn't been since the last 3 years that arrests have been increasing ten-fold as recruit numbers went up. Apparently there was a big flare up in the 06-07 season when hotshot recruits came in acting like they were priveleged because of how many stars were next to their name while starters weren't so great (note: This is seen as a large part of the reason Drew Tate was so angry at everyone that year, the youngsters were on starter's asses because they were cocky).

As a former student who has a deep love for the University and town, I saw the otherside of the coin and decided to bolt early. Iowa City is a wonderful weekend, however, you can find yourself in alot of trouble time and time again. Some people are able to avoid those situations, some aren't. Unfortunately, I dont think hotshot football players are usually logical enough to avoid them.

Oh and City Boyz Inc 4 life.

Life's a Hustle.

There's quite a few people calling for both Barta and Ferentz's heads.

While this is an awful situation for the victim and her family, the Press-Citizen put forth some of the most irresponsible reporting that I've ever witnessed. I was initially outraged when I read their story, thinking that several coaches and members of the Athletic Dept were involved in some sort of cover-up. After reading this, however, I believe that they are attempting to sensationalize this story. Yes, there were faculty and AD members that screwed up immensely here, but Coach Ferentz and Barta appeared to have nothing to do with this horrible situation other than the initial meeting. From there Ferentz suspended and subsequently dismissed the players. Should the legal process have been handled differently? Absolutely. Was there some elaborate cover-up by Ferentz, Barta, and some within the AD? I seriously doubt it after taking the full letter into consideration. The victim's mother clearly points out the individuals she takes issue with the most on this matter.

As for the other issues the football program have had over the past few years, there most certainly was a problem at one point. Everything I've heard indicates that the coaches spent an inordinate amount of time this spring going over these problems in an effort to clean the program up. I believe that the problems stemmed from a larger issue that the coaches have already started to rectify, although obviously not completely with the recent arrest of an incoming freshman. What frustrates me more than anything is the fact that I recently graduated from Iowa and had class with so many guys on the football (as well as basketball) teams. Everyone of those guys were absolute gentlemen and each and every guy I talked to were sick and tired of these idiots dragging them and the program down. No, that doesn't change anything that has happened in the past nor the present, I'm not that naive. I just think we all need to wait for the full facts to come out in this particular case, knowing what recent history has already taught us. It's very easy to let the actions of a few determine your view of an entire group. I believe that some university members will come out of it looking pretty bad, but not to the extent or the number that the Press-Citizen wants you to think. I believe that a few members absolutely bungled this situation, and if all is proven true, should go down for it. Until then, I'll reserve any other judgment.

I'll re-post the link to the mother's letter here in case anyone missed it within the body of the text: Full Letter From Victim's Mother
