Red Sox looking to acquire Uribe in deal with Chicago

The Red Sox are deep in conversations with the White Sox on a trade that would send infielder Juan Uribe to Boston, according to sources.

Uribe is batting just .225 in limited playing time this season, but his three home runs are one more than all Red Sox shortstops have hit. Boston shortstops are 28th in the majors in runs scored and 23rd in RBIs.

It's not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston.

The White Sox want to rid themselves of Uribe's $4.5 million contract, perhaps in hopes of rekindling talks with Baltimore about second baseman Brian Roberts. If the White Sox could acquire Roberts, or another second baseman, they could shift Alexei Ramirez to shortstop and trade Orlando Cabrera, possibly to the Dodgers.

The possibility of trading for Roberts and then dealing Cabrera was first reported by FoxSports.com.

Chicago is still looking for a starting pitcher to replace injured Jose Contreras. They could try to deal Cabrera for Derek Lowe, although the Dodgers don't have much depth in their rotation and would be hesitant to part with him.

Yeah, let's trade our leadoff man. Good idea

The idea would be that we get a better lead off man.

Anyway, I'm not surprised to see this rumor. The fact that Uribe was playing 3rd yesterday, where we haven't seen him play in a while (have we?), should be a clue that they are show casing him.

Crede's legitimately hurting. They wouldn't say anything about a back injury if they were making it up. With Ozuna gone, Uribe is the back up there. Juan didn't hurt KW's leverage with his play the last 2 days.

just expanding on a thought here:

should Uribe and Cabrera get traded and Roberts comes back to the Sox, we can most likely expect Fields to be called up to back up Crede at 3rd, correct?

Also, who would end up being the utility infielder/swingman?

Oh right I forgot about Pablo.

That article would indicate Cora would be the utility guy. Fields would back up third I'd imagine. Crede is hurt, I don't see any reason not to give Fields the chance.

I'll puke if we move Uribe just so we can overpay to get Brian Roberts and then trade a Type-A free agent for a #4-5 starter in Lowe. We've got plenty of options in AAA and our bullpen before we have to trade away O-Cab

exactly.

One of the possibilities is Alex Cora coming back from Boston. Unless KW has the other deals or another deal corresponding to it, he would be idiotic to trade Uribe straight up for Cora. Uribe is the better player, and is loved in the White Sox clubhouse. I wouldn't think it would be Fields myself. I think they would need someone who also could play SS.

1. You don't trade Cabrera to get Derek Lowe.

2 .What would we have to trade to get Brian Roberts? He won't come free.

Maybe LA has something Baltimore wants, + someone from the Sox or the minors

I'd definitely puke if they traded Uribe for Cora. Uribe is a better utillity guy than Alex Cora.

Uribe is the best defensive third-baseman in the Sox organization. Although his batting is extremely streaky, he does have 20 HR power. He's also a top tier defensive SS and second-baseman.

If they get some real value for Uribe, fine. But you don't trade him for an Alex Cora or a run-of-the mill "prospect".

Exactly, Why help an opponent in a pennant race to save 2 mil and downgrade? Cora has 17 hits in 61 AB's WHOOPDEE DOO! He is still a career .245 hitter to me. Get him more AB's and his true colors will show. At least when Uribe hits .245 you know you have a glove and some pop to go with it.

Some other failed middle infielder who can be acquired for little.

200 innings a year, 111ERA+, 1.25 WHIP, and a huge GB/FB is 4th/5th starter material these days?

Uribe for Cora? That doesnt make us better at all. And Ramirez hasn't played much SS at ALL this year, are we certain he would be okay to finish the year off there? And hasn't Roberts been slumping lately? And do we even have the chips to offer Baltamore for Roberts? Unless its some crazy 3 way deal i dont think this whole deal happens. OC has been more than productive as our leadoff hitter this year... What we really need is more pitching depth.
