Obama Will Not Run in 2008

Calling it as "a silly question," Sen.-elect Barack Obama (D-IL) pledged "he would resist any overtures to run for president or vice president before the end of his six-year term as a U.S. senator," the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

They had this thing where they were showing Tim Russert asking all these politicians if they had any plans to run for president. All of them said no when he backed them into a corner, lol. The moral of that story is to never take a denial of intentions like that at face value.

Exactly the point I was trying to make. There is NO WAY that a person in their own party would be saying that they want Stevens seat right now.

Yet the question has to be asked and denied.

I do have some thoughts about him losing his positions while enjoying the presumption of innocence guaranteed by our Constitution. Have we finally all but abandoned that legal ideal in favor of media reports and rush to judgments?

It's the same general principle of a cop being placed on administrative leave/position while he's under investigation for some kind of misconduct.

you guys do realize that Stevens is actually in a competitive primary right now?

With about 4 weeks going to the election, Stevens's support has softened quite a bit since the indictment, but he's still holding a huge post-indictment polling lead.

Though Stevens faces six opponents in the Aug. 26 Republican primary, the poll showed him with a handsome lead over businessman Dave Cuddy, his chief competition. In the same July 30-31 survey, which polled 219 Republicans about the primary, Stevens scored 59 percent and Cuddy had 19 percent with about 20 percent undecided.

I believe this means that he will not be able to vote for himself.

haha

but he can still vote in the senate if he wins!

can he submit his senate votes from jail, like an absentee ballot for imprisoned United States senators?

I'd bet the reason he's staying because if he does win, he can step down and be replaced by Gov. Palin

Actually no, he can't.

Thanks to voter initiative in Alaska, his replacement must be done by special election within 60-90 days of the seat being vacated. There is some debate as to whether or not the Governor may name a replacement for that time frame as an interim Senator which is something that would be decided by the courts if the Governor determines it necessary to make an appointment. (Apparently, Alaska has two overlapping, conflicting laws regarding Senatorial appointments.)

However, since Stevens has chosen not to bow out of the campaign, the point is moot. Meet your new Junior Senator from Alaska, Mark Begich.

New AK Poll:

Republican Senator Ted Stevens has fallen eight points behind Democrat Mark Begich in his bid for re-election, and most Alaska voters now believe Stevens should resign from office.

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey of Alaska voters, conducted a day after Stevens was found guilty of filing false financial disclosure forms, finds that 52% plan to vote for Begich while 44% support Stevens. Alaskan Independence Party candidate Bob Bird picks up three percent (3%) of the vote while two percent (2%) remain undecided.

There's no clean criminal record required to run for office. Just to vote for one.

So someone who did 10 years for manslaughter can run for President but Arnold Schwarzenegger can't?

technically Arnold can run for President, he just can't hold the office or be on the ballot in most states.
