witesoxfan
This might well be the most ridiculous thread I've seen in a while. The Royals wouldn't trade Greinke without getting a monster package in return and almost certainly not within the division, Nick Masset isn't that good (straight fastball, mediocre curve, and not much else) and team's realize that; Texas would be interested in him because he throws hard, has major league experience, and he might be cheap, and he has virtually no value whatsoever, so anybody thinking the Sox would get anything great for him is fooling themself. Personally, I don't see the value in trading Nick Masset straight up for someone...if anything, he should be a throw-in to finish a deal. witesoxfan
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) He does?? I didn't say he throws 142 MPH, but 93 MPH is faster than the average major league fastball...that's hard, isn't it? I mean, do you want to split hairs and say he only throws semi-hard or not so soft or what? If you got hit by his fastball, you'd fall to the ground and wince in pain. I'm not trying to be Captain Wise-A** here, but when I think of hard, I think 95+. If Massett throws a moving 92-93 mph fastball right down the shoot, it has a good chance of going 400 feet, while a 95+ mph fastball right down the shoot is tougher. And yes, 2-3+ mph does make a difference.

And yes, 2-3+ mph does make a difference. It makes a difference, but it's actually easier to hit a HR on a faster pitch than a slower pitch. For example, why can't we hit Kevin Slowey but rock the s*** out of Joel Zumaya. It doesn't take a big swing to hit a HR on a 100 mph fastball or 95 for that matter. Look at Swish vs Nathan last night. With that said, I've been hit with 90+ mph fastballs, and while they hurt, it doesn't make you fall and wince every time. Oh, and any 92-93 mph fastball down the shoot has a good chance of going a long way. It's not like only Masset has this problem.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 07:10 PM) You pack Masset's bags. I'll drive him to the airport. Then the Sox should promote Derek Rodriguez from Charlotte. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=457561 Rodriguez has a very nice arm that gets good sink and a real good slider. I'd consider him a legit relief prospect and I would not be surprised at all if he has a prominent role in the Sox pen in the future. I say this about very few relief prospects in our system, but Rodriguez is a legit relief prospect.

He's got the stuff and it appears the control as well to succeed here. Kanekoa Texeira might just be around the corner too. And then Poreda could come in and be another Matt Thornton... we do have some good RP depth, which is nothing knew about this organization. Over the years it seems as if we've developed MLB-caliber relievers about as well as anyone else. Relievers and outfielders, that's our game I guess. Kenny Hates Prospects
QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 10:32 PM) Floyd played those chances tonight, 93 MPH right down the middle to Morneau, and then there was a big breeze coming from his way. When Floyd has his breaking stuff working along with his change he can get away with just about anything, whereas Masset isn't lucky enough to have the kind of secondary stuff to keep hitters off his FB. I don't know how many times this year I've seen an opposing hitter K on or foul off a meatball or hanging breaking ball from Floyd.

And yes, 2-3+ mph does make a difference. It's actually the opposite especially in the majors unless you're talking 99-101 mph. It's a good pitch to set up for a strikeout or something, but a straight fastball down the middle is probably the easiest pitch to hit in baseball even if it's 95+, especially when you can see it coming. Well-placed fastballs with movement are what get guys out. In either case, you don't want to be throwing either one of them right over the plate because both of them will end up in some kid's glove 400 feet away. RockRaines
QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:32 PM) Floyd played those chances tonight, 93 MPH right down the middle to Morneau, and then there was a big breeze coming from his way. Floyd's fastball is a little trickier than you think. He sinks it and runs it at times, so when he throws the 4 seamer it appears to rise.
