The Waiver Wire

Quality middle relief is nearly impossible to get through waivers.

Usually, only someone of the caliber of Mike MacDougal is the level of RP that makes it through.

This post is absolutely hilarious. MacDougal was acquired in July...a week before the deadline as a matter of fact. He was fantastic down the stretch...honestly, please find me five relievers who were better in the entire majors with a contending team from July 24th on in 2006 than Mike MacDougal, leverage situations included. It'll be really goddamn hard.

Secondly, find me 10 MIDDLE relievers who were better than Scott Sullivan was for the White Sox in 2003. Maybe you don't remember how the Sox lost superstudprospect Tim Hummel in late August of 2003...well, that's how. Sullivan put up an ERA of 3.77, a WHIP of 1.05, and put up pretty damn good peripherals for a middle reliever.

The Sox are just fine with finding middle relievers anywhere and anywhere, so don't bring up MacDougal (who turned to s*** in 2007...every other pitcher did too, so I'm not sure why you appear to be singling out MacDougal) or Sullivan in the argument in terms of finding relievers midseason...KW is pretty solid at it.

You should get more worked up.

About relievers on waivers, I don't who we'd want that would actually go through. I can see players like Walker and Bradford with the O's put through but there's a pretty good chance those guys would get claimed pretty quickly. I know teams like to sometimes put a bunch of guys on waivers for the sake of disguising a player they want to deal, but there are certain players, like say Bradford, that the entire league has to know is available.

I would think that Minnesota would block us.

'blocking' us means that they would have to be willing to pick them up as well. You always have to be prepared for the releasing team to call your bluff and just let you have them.

But if the White Sox claim somebody, they have, I believe, 48 hours to work on a deal. No play has to "clear" waivers.

But for them to claim someone, all the teams below them would have to pass. If any of them claimed the player, they could either work out a trade, assign the contract to the team making the claim, or revoke the waiver, and the White Sox or any team above the team making the initial claim would be SOL if they were after that player.

Does the waiver wire go in inverse order of last year's full standings or the current season's standings?

Its current now. I think at the beginning of the season for a certain period, it goes based on the previous season's finish.

every year you read somewhere "X player was put on waivers" and "X player was pulled back from waivers", is this an official release on MLB.com? Or is it leaked info?

I have also read that there are many players that are put on waivers that you never hear about

It's basically always leaked. Most teams will try to put anyone out there that they think has a remote shot of getting through just in case a spectacular trade offer comes along. I think we tried to see if Buehrle and Garland could pass through in 05, for example. But it's always leaked, that info is never officially published.
