whitesoxbrian
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:44 PM) The last two losses were pathetic but they didn't really upset me that much. We should have gotten Monday's game with our ace pitcher against a guy who we've destroyed earlier in the season. Instead we just rolled over and vomited all over ourselves. Not that I really expected it, but not getting any pitching help is really going to cost us this division. I don't think this team has enough pitching to win the race. No worries, our #1 is on the mound tomorrow.

Kenny Hates Prospects
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:33 PM) Hawk was unbearable tonight. Carlos Gomez freaking sucks. He doesn't hit for average, doesn't get on base, his SB % is not good, he doesn't hit for power. He is essentially a worthless offensive player. Carlos Gomez has a chance to be the best offensive player in this league... ....okay.... ...meanwhile it is arguable that the current best offensive player in this league is ON YOUR OWN f***ING TEAM!!! Stupid Hawk
southsideirish71
Its amazing. We hire Guillen and Kenny gets up in a press conference and talks about playing Grinder ball similar to the twins. And how he is going to bring in grinders. I guess he must need new glasses, because we seem to think that Nick Punto and others like him are large men who cant run, who hits lots of home runs and have low Batting averages. We have come full circle here. Kenny built his original teams around large behemoth sluggers, then he traded a few away and talked a good game about speed, that was a myth. This team is 2004 all over again. Rotten Rotten defense surrounded by a medicore team, that has no balls. Thats 2004 in a nutshell. I am so glad we ditched our line drive hitting outfielder. The guy with the best looking swing in our system, and brought another 260ish hitter with power. But he is funny. f***ing funny I tell you. He has his own club. Cant hit that good this year. But my god did you see him high five his own poster. Vomits Edited August 1, 2008 by southsideirish71

Flash Tizzle
QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:37 PM) Well in Danks' defense there's not usually a 10 minute break between pitches. Bullpen just didn't bail him out. How is that any different than the rest he might have following a 123 inning from the offense? I believe he had warm up tosses as well. The entire fan experience obviously rattled him. It just is incredibly frustrating to walk someone after all of what happened. As if you could physically feel the momentum change. It was about the point I realized we were setting ourselves up for a loss.

fathom
So what happened to the offspeed pitches out of our bullpen? Logan has completely lost his slider, Dotel has nothing on his slider, we know Thornton doesn't have an offspeed pitch, and prior to getting hurt, Linebrink had lost all command of his splitter. striker
Whitesox suck on the road. Twins do too. We swept them in a four game series in Chicago. I want to go on a killing spree just like the next sox fan but we are still in first and have alot of games left. Plus now we have Griffey! CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 07:30 PM) There comes a point when you have to think to yourself, if the fans believe every lead is temporary against the Twins, ..... It's a little odd reading the game thread and seeing many bash Hawk and DJ because they are so complimetary of the Twins. The funny thing is that you predicted in the gamethread the Twins comeback in the fifth and also predicted the Twins expanding their lead after the Dye HR that cut the lead to 1 run. Your explanation was that it was "inevitable" IIRC. I will take a 4 run lead every game and I don't care where it's played but you definitely thought the lead was temporary. I really don't know what to make of this phenomena. You were doing just what Hawk was doing. Just as Hawk was calling it how he see's it so were you. Unfortunately you proved your point and so did Hawk , there's a lot about the Twins way of playing baseball to admire.
gosox41
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:30 PM) There comes a point when you have to think to yourself, if the fans believe every lead is temporary against the Twins, and the announcers believe it as well, then what's preventing the players from feeling similarily? I know it's a strange subject because we're talking about intangibles and ideas that can't be calculated, but hearing all about the invincibility of the Twins from management on down to Hawk grows tiring. It's one point to give them credit, quite another to endlessly slobber over their talent and "never surrender" attitude. I'm tired of it. It can't be helping anyone. I just wonder how it affects players when they're up 4-1, the 5th inning comes around, and Gomez reaches with a single. Tell me, just from your opinion, that no one our team thought "here we go again! Those damn Pirahnas are going to win again!" The defensive miscues and wildpitches should prove some mental issues are present. What worries me is, Hawk is citing our troubles in this dome every half inning. "Some places you just don't play well in." Well, guess what -- we have three remaining games against the Twins in the same stadium late September. It may be the deciding series in the division. Something needs to chance. Tell Guillen to put a muzzle on. Instruct Hawk to remove himself from Gomez's .254 ass. Hell, I'd love to hear Gullen guarantee a series victory next time around in Minnesota. Just SOMETHING to show we're confident in ourselves. Yes, in past seasons dismissing the Twins didn't help; but as of right now, what we're doing isn't either. This team is more talented than past seasons, and we've shown in two games the ability to get an early lead. I doubt Sox players are feeling what we think. Here's a novel idea for the Sox. Go into Minnesota and pound them for once. Ignore the crap that people say. We have a higher payroll. We have more talent. Just win.
Swingandalongonetoleft
I don't understand why Hawk and DJ are being brought into this, the game was terrible to watch regardless of what an old pirate lookalike and smooth jazz wnua 95.5 had to say about it. We do well at home, so do they. We're built around the long ball, they are on fundamentals- pitching, defense, baserunning. Their style of play is perfectly suited to beat us. If any team gets as careless with the ball as we did today, a sound baseball team like the Twins should and will take advantage of it. You can't forget about Nathan. I would feel more optimism against any other closer in the league with as much a 3 run ninth inning deficit. Twins up half a run going into the ninth? Save your energy for tomorrow. I'm glad we're out of there and still in first, I'm glad Minnie plays almost exclusively on the road in September, and I hope this serves as a wake up call to the White Sox. whitesoxfan101
This team just feels and looks so much like 2003, I'm getting painful flashbacks. The biggest problem with this series is we not only gave away two games, but two to the Twins, which equates to a direct 4 games in the standings. We could easily be 4 and a half up, but instead it's 1/2 game. Hopefully Griffey gives the team a spark, and moreso, hopefully the pitching and defense (although it was the pitching moreso in Minnesota) wake up. CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) How about our "Gold Glove" shortstop keep Mauer's liner in front of him? Just like the Indians season opener, it led the floodgates to open. That's my Dad's pet peeve . Fielders being too lazy to get in front of the ball because a backhand play looks so pretty. It can look awkward trying to get your body in front of it but with runners on its crucial to knock the ball down. Cabrera is f***ing garbage in the field, for every good play he makes, he dogs it on all the rest, remember yesterday when Paulie had to use a shovel to dig out that weakass throw to first? He's bad It's probably just my mind misremembering, but it felt like Uribe playing up the middle made our team better

fathom
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 1, 2008 -> 05:13 AM) I don't disagree with a lot that has been said. This series was gigantic, and the Sox really s*** the bed. I suppose it could have been a lot worse, but the fashion the Sox lost was pretty devastating. To have 3 of the 4 games in your hands against the team that is breathing down your neck as piss two of them away is inexcusable. With that said, I am going to remain optimistic, especially if this next 3 gamer is a success. The Sox August is loaded with home games. I don't fear any team that comes into the Cell with the way the Sox have played at home. I am one of the last Contreras fans on the board, so my optimism isn't going to be felt by most, but I am encouraged by the sound of the side session Jose had. I expect him to come back strong after a break. Same goes for Joe. This is crutch time, and I expect the guys to step up down the stretch. I pray Linebrink can come back sometime in August healthy, as it will be a tremendous boost to the entire bullpen, and team. Put this series behind us, leave the Dome in the rear view mirror, and hope for another Royal beating. If there's ever a time for Javy to go out and just win a game, regardless of how much our offense scores, it's Friday.

I predicted they'd lose the lead even before the inning began because I had a sinking feeling something would go wrong. Is it coincidence everything happened as I said? Yes, and it goes more towards the belief I have that the players think more closely to us than we imagine. Like they're waiting for something to go wrong. We've al been conditioned to feel this way, and this is what I want changed. I'm not suggesting Twins lack talent. As I wrote in the initial post, it's intangible ideas we're talking about. Pitchers still have to pitch and hitters have to hit. I just feel, even if it does absolutely nothing on the field, this organizational love for the Twins and this feeling no lead is safe can't be beneficial for us. Especially with one series remaining. Is there nothing to be said about subconsciously acting in a certain way? Isn't that what home field advantage is all about, anyways? We don't need home field fans, in addition to everything else I've mentioned about the Twins, adding ontop of one another.
whitesoxbrian
Carlos Gomez is clearly going to be the best offensive player in this league. His high OBP, his great SB technique, and his very good hitting for average and power ability will carry him over the top. Gomez and Kubel, who has a chance to be a great hitter and most certainly will, will most likely finish 1-2 in the MVP voting for the next 16 years. I actually think our offense and starting rotation will be fine and even above average, especially the offense. The problem is the bullpen is injured and performing terribly, and I'm not sure if that is going to change. Also, I think the defense will cut down the error totals as time goes on, but our lack of range on defense could get us killed. It just feels so much like 2003, hopefully I am wrong though because like in 2003, I love this roster. It just feels uneasy right now.
