In official city parlance, delineated by the University of Chicago in the 1920s, the Loop is community area of Chicago number 32, bounded by the Chicago River to the north and west, Roosevelt Road to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east

 

The U of C provided definition to the City.

In other words, they made it bigger so they could benefit off of it with higher prices because you are IN THE LOOP. Its the same reason people say they live in the WEST LOOP or SOUTH LOOP. They can make up whatever they want, it doesn't make it right. The loop by the very definition is the loop of the CTA. Anything else is just grandstanding.

Yes, in the 1920's they forsaw housing markets way into the future. Also there is virtually zero residential housing in that area comparative to other areas in the city, and still the prices arent nearly as high as those in the gold coast, lincoln park, old town, river north, wrigleyville and so on. So im not sure what prices you are talking about.

 

People say they live in Chicago for those reasons, but living the West Loop or South Loop just means you live closer to the business district and have an easier commute, no special connotation applies comparative to other parts of the city.

 

The initial definition of the loop was defined by the El tracks, but was changed in the 1920's to include the central business district, which has since then been considered part of THE LOOP. So saying the Sears Tower, the Merc, even the Opera House are in the Loop is considered correct by the City of chicago since they redefined the boundaries almost 90 years ago.

BTW, people say they live in thos areas because thats what they are called, in fact the West Loop is actually called West Loop Gate, and is defined by the city, Alderman, and a community organization.
