whitesoxfan101
The U.S.A. baseball team comes from behind to beat Canada 5-4 in what was basically a must win game for both sides. Also, the United States is now 7 medals ahead of China but 11 behind in golds. It is pretty clear the Chinese will take the all important gold count while America will take the overall count. Also, it's good to see the track and field stuff getting going, always fun to watch that.

whitesoxfan101
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 12:36 AM) Bolt's sub 10 second 100M was ridiculous. Oh I know, a 9.92 when you spend the last 50 meters looking to your left and right and jogging. If he doesn't win the 100 and do it in world record time in the finals, I'd be shocked. Good interview with Spitz too Spitz is a jagoff. He stated it was a tremendous load off his shoulders for 35 years, thats BS.For one thing not many people would even know who he is or what he did,and secondly you could tell by the way he has come out tooting his own horn that he wishes he could still hold that record. That guy totally rubbed me the wrong way,I could see why his teammates didnt like him. chimpy2121
Man, screw NBC. You can show all the US qualifying events live two months before the Olympics, but then when the 100m final comes you cant show it on one of the 5 channels live? What a joke. Bolt was nuts. He ran a WR 9.69 and made it look easy. I'm proud of Walter running a personal 9.91 to get the Bronze! His best event is the 200 so I'm looking forward to that. Milkman delivers
I don't understand how someone can root against their country. I can see rooting for the country of your ancestors, but not when they're going against your own country. I mean, Serbia? C'mon. I understand patriotism and all, but you're American. Go live in Serbia for an extended period of time and see if you think it's still so great.

Go live in Serbia for an extended period of time and see if you think it's still so great. Agreed. I always root for the country of my ancestry (Italy), but when they play America, it's go America no questions asked. The United States basketball team looked incredible today, that might be the best game by the international team since the olympics in Atlanta, if not since the original dream team in 1992. They will win every game they have left by at least 20 to 25 points if they can make three pointers, which they did today. Still a long way to go though, and you'd figure they'll have to win a tough game to get the gold medal. I'm with the poster who said it's a joke the 100 meters wasn't on live on any channel too. I understand they couldn't buy it out for primetime like they did the swimming, but in the age of the internet, the whole tape delay thing doesn't work. Jimbo's Drinker
I could care less about my ancestors nation! Americans love their ethnicity and varied cultures, but we cheer like mad for the stars and stripes. US beats top ranked Serbia in water polo. America, f*** yeah!!! That win was double huge in water polo. Not only is beating the best team in the world obviously awesome, but they'd have been out of the competition had they lost. Now, I believe they advance on if they win their next game. James Blake also lost his bronze medal match unfortunately. It's tough because he had a very good opponent and probably had a hangover from losing such a heartbreaker in the semifinals, so it's no surprise he lost in straight sets. Brian
I usually don't get into the Olympics but I have to say, I have watched more stuff this year than ever. We just got Dish Network with AT&T and there are two channels that run the in house feed of certain games, not just US. I've been watching all the swimming and even the gymnastics, thanks to Sacramone. It is hard for me to get into track because I think it is filtered with PED's, but hopefully I am wrong on that. I'll watch anyway and I love watching the Redeem Team play defense.
LosMediasBlancas
Phelps is not the best swimmer ever because: He doesn't swim the anchor in the relays. He can't win the 50 m freestyle, which supposedly is THE event in swimming. More events have been added since the 70's, events that Spitz could have also won had they been available during his time. I know very little about Olympic swimming, but the above are some interesting points that I've heard during these events. It's easy to write these critics off as 'haters', but is there any merit to this??
Rex Hudler
Let's not discount that Phelps has had to swim more times than Spitz to get his medals? They didn't use to have as many prelims and semis. Phelps has had to swim 17 times in like 9 days, sometimes with just a half hour between swims. I'd like to think he is the best ever, but like anything, you can argue that all night long and never get anywhere. What I do know is that what he is accomplishing is freaking amazing! He also is probably swimming against much stronger fields than Spitz ever faced as well. I'm not sure what swimming the anchor leg has to do with being considered the greatest swimmer ever. And Spitz did not win the 50 free either. Edited August 16, 2008 by whitesoxfan99

I have to agree with you. He's really arrogant and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants Phelps to lose, or at least not break a world record in his last race so he can say he broke more records than Phelps did. I saw an interview before where he was mad that people say they don't recognize him without his mustache. And he's mad that he didn't get invited to the Olympics. It's not all about him. StrangeSox
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) I'm sure you could have a friend back in Serbia hook up a slingbox or watch the Serbian channel that covers the Olympics through your satellite... since this American media is just so terrible. You know, the American media you digest 24 hours a day. Better shut that TV off right now, actually, because that American media is about to cover this White Sox game. That American Ken Harrelson is such a homer too. Face it, you live in America, the media is going to be biased toward the home country. The only person who can stop the ingestion of the terrible American media is you, by turning off the tv, not logging into soxtalk, not going to American Website... not doing all the American things you like to do in this country. This doesn't mean I love you any less, but I'm tired of you complaining about America in this thread with nothing to back it up. I was in Sandusky, Ohio this past week. It's on Lake Eerie -- pretty close to Canada. There was a Canadian channel broadcasting the Olympics. Now, they were obviously talking about the "home team" a lot more (talking about the great 18th place finish for some Canadian), but the coverage was distinctly different in style. The American broadcast was all about story lines, while the Canadian one seemed to be more about the actual games and performances. I enjoyed the Canadian approach much more than NBC's. As far as complaints about coverage goes, if you've got an HDTV cable/ satellite package, though, you should be able to see some coverage of most of the events. I've seen badminton, equestrian, handball, waterpolo, shooting, and many others I'm sure I'm forgetting on various channels. daa84
what i dont get ....people say phelps is the greatest olympian ever....but how many people can even get the opportunity to win 8 medals? You can be the best wreslter in the world, but you only can get 1 medal. Ditto basketball player. I suppose track and field you can do alot of events, but in swimming, phelps got 2 medals for swimming 100m of butterfly (medley relay and individual) also the 200 fly i think he got it for which are all very similar races....don't get me wrong congrats to the guy on 8 golds..its pretty cool, but i think what he did is overplayed by the general population, because 95% of olympians dont even get a chance to win 8 medals, based strictly on the nature of their sports Edited August 17, 2008 by daa84
