Winning Ugly
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates have traded minor league pitcher Franklyn German to the White Sox for a player to be named. Skinny: German posted a 2.08 ERA in 21 2/3 innings for the Rangers, but he was outrighted and opted for free agency. The righty signed with the Pirates, where he had a 3.58 ERA in 27 2/3 innings at Triple-A. The White Sox are scrambling for pitching depth, and German could join their bullpen soon. He'll have to work on his 37/30 K/BB ratio so far this year. Looks like Carrasco will still start with German taking his spot. I don't mind it, as I feel Washburn would cost too much if the Yanks couldn't deal for him.

DBAHO
Looks like we're just desperate for arms right now. I doubt we would have given up anyone of note e.g the Ramirez for Orlando trade.
BearSox
he's got good stuff, IIRC... he just can't throw strikes. I'd rather see how Broadway does before we call up German.

Milkman delivers
I have no idea who this guy is. I agree with DBAHO. It looks like we're just desperately reaching for anyone we can get a hold of. If these are the moves we're going to depend on, then we're screwed. We need a legitimate starter.

If German was obtained "for a player to be named", it doesn't sound like we gave up enough for him to preclude a deal for Washburn. That said, I agree that if the Yankees couldn't make a deal for Washburn, I'm not feeling great about our chances either.

It looks like we're just desperately reaching for anyone we can get a hold of. If these are the moves we're going to depend on, then we're screwed. We need a legitimate starter. What we need, and what we can get are two different things. Kenny is trying to improve the team, even if it just incrementally. Like it or not, things like budgets and what another team is willing to deal us do come into account here.

scenario
Hmm... A guy capable of striking people out, but who has trouble aiming the ball. Sounds like another Coop project. Is he going to Chicago or Charlotte?
DBAHO
Washburn just scares me too much considering his salary and what we'd probably have to give up for him. Even though his ERA is decent away from Safeco. But will the likes of Broadway or Egbert be given a chance to start when we're contending for a playoff spot? I'd doubt it. Texsox
Little by little. At this point a huge acquisition probably isn't going to happen. There is plenty of room for improvement from our current pitching corp. Just getting back close to first half would be a bigger improvement than anyone we are going to pick up. It would also help immensely if MB pitched like INAA

WCSox
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 07:49 AM) Washburn just scares me too much considering his salary Why in the hell do people keep saying this? What would we owe him? $13 million over 1.3 years? That's not exactly a Zito- or Hampton-like risk. And if Jose's contract is insured, we'd be recouping at least half that.
