Gregory Pratt
I see several problems here. There is no way you can say that for sure. Agreed. I am not the General Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bailey is the pitching version of Brian Anderson. Lots of talent, completely sucked once given an opportunity. Disagree. Bailey was projected to be much greater at his position than Anderson, and comparing the two is therefore flawed. Further, Bailey was always much more talented than Anderson, further discrediting the comparison. Bailey is 22 and Anderson is 26. Agreed. Bailey is, therefore, very young and has all the potential in the world; Brian Anderson has not improved at all and appears the exact same on a baseball field as he did in 2006. Bailey has not lost any of his stuff, while Anderson has not improved on his. Very many differences. If Bailey continues struggling, there's no reason they couldn't make a deal like AZ did with Quentin. Quentin was blocked in Arizona; Bailey isn't in Cinci. There's one difference. Another: seems like Arizona made that deal with us to flip those prospects. Anderson or Fields/Broadway for Bailey. Why the hell not? Because Byrnes isn't half-asleep when he makes trades. Because Broadway sucks and has a limited ceiling while Bailey's is still through the roof. Because Fields/Anderson aren't special or potentially special players. Gregory Pratt
LOL, I just now realized that Bailey is not with the Diamondbacks; I think I obviously know that, as I've written about Bailey in my Pepper and elsewhere and know baseball, but I had a brain-fart because of the name of this post. My bad! I didn't just edit the typo because I'm not ashamed to make the occasional mistake. Edit: Hell, I wrote in the original that he's in Cinci. I wonder what I was thinking when I also said that Byrnes wouldn't trade him. It's late. Edited August 14, 2008 by Gregory Pratt

Good thing you're not the manager of the D-Backs, but Bailey is on the Reds. I never compared the abilities of Anderson and Bailey, but they're production, still making the comparison totally valid. Yes, Bailey has a lot of potential, but he hasn't lived up to it at all. In fact, he hasn't shown much potential at all this season. Stop associating the great prospect name of Homer Bailey to the MLB pitcher Homer Bailey who has sucked. Arizona couldn't have done the deal to flip prospects. Quentin already had MLB experience and Cunningham isn't very close to the majors. If you don't think Fields and his 40 HR potential isn't potentially special, then you have worse problems than your unhealthy man crush with John Scheurholtz and Bill Belicheck. Gregory Pratt
I agree to disagree. Edit: Though I'd love to hear other peoples' opinions on whether or not the Reds would trade us Homer Bailey for Brian Anderson and Lance Broadway. Gregory Pratt
I'd have defended Gavin Floyd when he was 22, too. Hell, I'd be defending Floyd now if his BABIP weren't ridiculous and his HR rate weren't still bad and his K/BB weren't sketchy. As it is I just shrug and say, Maybe he's figured it out but it doesn't look like that to me. Congratulations to him for having a decent year. Do it through September and next season. Good luck. And I wouldn't believe that you could get him for Brian Anderson, either.

The development of his peripherals as the season has worn on suggests to me that he's atleast starting to figure it out and should be a solid #3-4 starting pitcher (for 5-10 years). I also think that the Reds are souring on Homer Bailey but that you can't just give up a pitcher with the ability of Bailey after 2 seasons. I give someone who was as highly touted as Bailey atleast 4 years to develop into something solid; if not, then you can give up on him while he will still have value at 24 but you also have a pretty good read on his development as a prospect. You don't give up on him if you don't find the value you should (but you almost certainly will).
